cross threaded spark plug

Help!! My No.2 cylinder has a cross-threaded spark plug. It is not stripped yet as I am able to screw the plug in about 3/4 of the way on the cross-thread at which time the threads tighten up.

I am unsure of how to proceed from here. Do I try to thread it in all the way (adding to the cross-threaded situation)? I realize that ultimately I will have to install a helicoil but I am not sure if I need to do this now and if so do I have to remove the head?

Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

You can use a rethreader, sold at Sears. The tap will not cut any material only straighten the threads. I put some batting in the plug hole ( the stuff they use to fill cheap pillows with) to catch any debri that could come off and put some grease on the tap.

I pull it out with long needle nose pliers then shop-vac the cylinder clean.
