gasket cleaner

Post by morg56 »

Hi all ,I'm trying to clean the cam cover gasket that I bought 2 years ago .When I put it on I put on way too much "Permatex Red RTV high temp gasket maker ". It sticks really well all the way around and on both sides .I know now you only need to apply the stuff in the corners of the 1/2 circles at the cam ends ,and a few spots just to hold it . New ones are about $100 up in canada ,so if I could I would like to reuse this one . It seems in great shape ,no cracks or signs wear ,very pliable . Any ideas ,thanks

I have no good ideas but I feel your pain. I used a block of wood to scrape what sealant I could off the gasket.

Acetone or carb cleaner will soften the sealant and release it from the gasket. Now you know why I said cleaning the gasket and cover takes longer than adjusting the valves.

A set of tweezers, a couple beers and the first half of a football game.

Never ever use RTV sealants on these engines.RTV is soluable in hot oil, Any excess that is pushed into the valve area will dissolve, migrate to the sump and clog the oil filter pickup screen. Disaster in the making.
