in-line fuel filter

Post by 7mmBR »

Hi I have an 82 Pro-Link without an in-line fuel filter and thinking would like to add one. A little confused by a Honda part I see on eBay. Can I put just about any inline filter next to the petcock? I had decided there was nothing stock on these but then saw a minty 81 on YouTube with garden variety filter by petcock. I saw a Napa part # in here. Good idea to add one, right?

For my '82 I have installed an in-line between the valve and the carbs. You'll find space somewhere. [I have removed the vacuum valve. Bit of a nuisance to me. Just remember to turn off the fuel when you park!!] Use a high flowing filter -- not some pencil size thing. NAPA and others are fine. 5/16" Then, remove the very fine filter from the bowl on the petcock. Speaking for my experience, that little thing clogs much too easily due to its small size. Good filter -- just too small. The tank screen, inside the tank, only prevents 'chunk' size things from entering the line.

I use a "garden variety" somewhat larger in-line fuel filter on my Xes. Right behind the petcock, before the vacuum valve including the 81. Behind the vacuum valve you would need two of them.

I am personally a fan of a nice clean intact screen inside the tank, and forego the inline filter. I had weird running issues years ago that I eventually traced to an inline filter and I never forgave the entire species :-). I am aware that many guys successfully use and love them. Honda still sells the entire 82 petcock with a nice new tank screen. When we finish a bike that we have spotlessly cleaned the tank and carburetors on, I always get a little extra peace of mind installing a new petcock and screen.

This is what I have been using on my '80. High flow, EtOH resistant and nary a problem. https://hvccycle.net/visu-filter-large- ... ree-angle/
