This forum here is probably not the right place to do this. But consider that you will have a hard time finding a used Touring/ Sport Touring BMW with low miles. And the R1200GS is arguably the world's best "all-around" bike and also the best selling. They are expensive, but so is a Honda GL1800. If you would have a chance to go to the BMW Owner's Group International Rally in Gilette, WY in July, you would quickly change your mind about BMWs being a sort of rich man's bike for fair weather riding, with about 8,000 hard-core long distance riders in attendance of which 60% camp.

Thanks for the info. It's always fun to learn something new and I will be educating myself on the BMW bikes. To be honest, Beamers are something of a novelty here as I rarely see one when out driving. If you have a picture of yours I would like to see it if possible.

This is probably my last post on this topic as I am almost 100% sure the problem is now resolved. After changing to 20/50 Honda oil I have spent the last 5 days testing it out on increasingly warm days. The first day was 78 and today is 94 and the lifter issue hasn't returned. Tomorrow will be the final test doing stop and go driving during midday. Apparently the heavier, better quality oil has reduced the friction and reduced the overall temp of the engine. Thanks to everyone that weighed in with suggestions because I learned a very important lesson about what oil to use in all my bikes and while I had my alternator apart realized I had worn down brushes and replaced them. The replacement head I bought for this bike can now be installed on my other X and I will be all set.

I thought I would check in "one last time" to report that I was finally able to take a drive in 100 degree weather with-out any ill effects. This post is closed.

Yep, 102 in fact. It's not that unusual to reach 100 here in July and August.
In the early '70's I remember a 110 degree day and being on my Cb350-4 with a beautiful, scantily clad girl and not even feeling the heat around me.....just behind me...................aaah to be 20 again!!!
