I wouldn't worry too much, just tell him that if he is not sure about some think to not do it.
Bring him the manual and give him link to this forum so he can find things out.
It's like every other engine but when it comes to cam chains and
Timing, it is a bit more complex.
You will be fine,
You gave him the repair manual?

Yes, I gave him the shop manual and Mike Nixon's manual and told him to clean the carbs while he had the engine tilted. I feel like I pawned my problems off to someone else and I know my budget is going to suffer for it. But I can't wait to get it back and get back on it. Just having it back in my garage and tinkering with it (much more carefully) will give me great satisfaction for years to come.

I quickly learned that budget and CBX should never been used in the same sentence.
The first time you run through the gears after it is sorted out, all the expense and worry will be worth it.

Woot Woot. As fate would have it a second 1982 CBX has shown up in my life this past week :D . But I will save that story for another thread.

I am now 1 year into owning my 1st CBX and am amazed at how many people ''know how to work on an X''. It's like they just come out of the woodwork. One of my personal mottos is......"it is not what you know that makes the man, but what you are willing to admit that you don't know!" I know your decision was not an easy one but I applaud  you for making it.

I sure wish you God speed on that repair and hope your riding your CBX soon.

This is one of the nicest responses I've ever read or had. Good luck to you on your second X, or maybe just getting a second X was luck enough. THX for your comments -

I'm wondering how long I should wait before I contact the shop that has my bike for an update from them? I dropped it off at closing time on the 11th. They said they should be able to get to it this week. I'm thinking Thursday? I told them I wasn't in a hurry to get it back and that it was more important to me for them to do a good job.
What a quandary - I want to know, but I fear the news. Sure will be glad when this is over.

Obviously you know the shop better than any of us but i would not wait at all.
They may even need some help.

Actually, I have never used this shop (or any shop for that matter) and all I know about them comes from a few friends that give it high marks. I left them the shop manuals and they are known for restoration of old bikes, so they should know more than I do. I wish they'd let me participate in the work, but it's not how they operate. They do have a backlog of bikes waiting to be restored, but they also said they'd get to it this week. My fingers and toes are crossed!

It would be nice if they took a few pictures so we can see what happened.

I'll call them tomorrow. Maybe they'll let me stop by and take some pics, if they have the head off?

Tell them you've got a lot of fans breathing down your neck for some pictures of a CBX on the table. Also, we wouldn't mind seeing pics of the guys doing the surgery.
