No, to the left is a dowell. That might have been miss-shaped or corroded and not allowing the head to seat tightly there.

How many miles a year does your bike do?
Do you take long trips (500 miles +).
It is an old bike, one option is to just ride it and clean off the oil with WD40 after a ride.
