Phil Taber suggested I post this question here, and seek Dave McMunn's advice and insight.
Just bought this nice non running 80 model, got it home fired it up to find it wont shift into 5th.... All the other 4 gears shift smoothly,
The lower pic shows it in 4th gear, upper pic shows roller not clicking into place, the gear shift drum will not move/turn any further so roller can click into place
80 model wont shift into 5th gear? Dave M.?

Hi,
Has the engine been apart recently - given you have just got it there maybe no way of knowing.
Not sure whether this true on all engines, but on one of mine the gear shaft which holds the selector forks is not symmetrical - if you put it in the wrong way around it looks OK but you can't select all the gears. Luckily I spotted this before I I closed the cases - but would be really easy to miss it.
Paul.

Can't offer anything other than if it is a high mileage engine maybe a tired spring?
It does look like the screw in the background has been introduced to an impact driver so it might have been opened up.

I think Paul is right - the shift fork shaft is in backwards. I found that out the hard way too. Turns your transmission into an instant 4-speed. Your shift drum won't make the long around-the-horn path into 5th because the fork won't shift far enough. Easy fix, but the cases have to be split.
For confirmation, carefully examine the crankcase split for evidence that it has been apart. You can always tell. If it has, I'll bet that's your problem.
