Today when I removed the snap ring in the fork slider to change fork seals on my "82 I found 2 back up rings on top of the fork seal.
The wider ring is aluminum and the narrow ring is steel. The fork seals that were in there are not OEM Honda seals and I think the aluminum back up ring goes with the old seals but I want to make sure I use the correct one. Is the narrow steel one correct? Thanks.

Narrow one is correct for stock seals.

Be certain that you don't seat the seal too deep. Doing so can deform the seal case with resultant leak. Go just deep enough. One method is to leave everything short a hair. Then, drive on the snap ring until it seats. This will have the seal and back-up ring sitting against the snap ring as it should.

P.S. Be certain to have the seal oriented correctly!! Check carefully against the photo in the manual. (Don't ask me why I mention this!)

Good tip Larry, fork seals are installed. Now on to installing the Progressive rear shock.

That 3610 is a great product - I tested the prototype on my own Prolink on a 2000 mile tour last year = they made come very slight refinements to the mounting points and we've now sold a handful. Those are built to order and so take a few weeks to get in hand, but it is night and day improved over the stock air shock.
