Help with value determination - 79 OEM Exhaust

Post by darbyfam »

I recently purchased a 79 CBX which came with the stock exhaust as well as a new set of Delkevic exhaust on the bike. The OEM exhaust is in pretty amazing condition considering it's age.

I would like to see them end up on a restoration project that is all OEM.

Could you all help with a valuation given the pics below? Not looking for the pie in the sky price, but a reasonable value that would help someone get that restoration done right. Thanks

The only dent I can find

Looks like a repair was done on the underside?

The worst part of them - which looks like all surface rust to me

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Darren: In picture No4 the usual problem area on all CBX exhausts is hidden by the heat shield mount. You should take this off and look at the situation there. It seems it was repaired with JBWeld

I will pull that off and look.

Is there any value in these to anyone?

If not, I will just throw them up in the attic.

Just a small thing but i like to have a blanket or large piece of cardboard underneath exhausts when laying them on concrete or asphalt.
Another common area of concern besides where EMS mentioned is the condition of the baffles inside. Any rattling when you shake them? It doesn't look to have the swelling from the inside which shows up about 5" from the end.
Just a guesstimate but if the repair under the heat shields is done well they could be worth $600-700.00
Shipping costs could be ugly.

No noises when I shake them.

My driveway is a polished concrete (which sucks when it gets wet :) ).

Thank you for the input!

They are a solid, decent-looking set. Great for a nice rider. $400-$500. I think this is similar to what you heard elsewhere. The CBX community is relatively small and the same guys are everywhere.

Asking for a value and selling on a forum may not be the best way. Most forum members are "low-ballers" and try to snatch a deal. That is my experience.
None of the "professional" parts sellers here would sell that set for $400-$500.- One side maybe. Not both. i put the value at $700-$800.- if the damage on the collector is real rust and has a hole. If it is just surface rust - $1000 - $1,200

They exhaust is headed to the UK for a restoration/rider project. I sold them for $500.00 Thank you everyone for your assistance.

I wasn't trying "make money" on them, just wanted a decent deal for me and for the buyer and wanted to make sure they ended up on a bike rather than sitting in my attic.

Professional dealers are usually being realistic, they need to make a dollar for their work otherwise there's no point.

When I visited Bert at Six Center Motoren we discussed old pipes, he told me even if the collector area was completely rusted out the headers still have value, they can be salvaged and new collectors welded on.
CBX a work in progress, still improving...GS1150EFE completed and awaiting modifications.....RD350, remnants in boxes scattered throughout the garage

Good deal.
Just curious, ballpark price on the shipping to the UK?

The buyer is arranging shipping and paying for it himself. I am unsure of the cost.
