Can I make a CBX Prolink exhaust work on a 1980 CBX

Post by ezridermn »

Can someone tell me the difference between an OEM CBX Prolink exhaust and the earlier model CBX OEM exhaust? Can I make a OEM 1982 CBX exhaust system work on a 1980 CBX? Will a Kerker 6 into 2 exhaust system mounted on my 1982 Prolink work on a 1980 CBX without modification?

Thanks.

The 81-82 has a cross over pipe tieing the two together. And yes it will fit but the rubber bumpers for the side and center stand are different . But you can make some stops for them with a little rigging. Same thing for the kerker. You will have to modify the stops for the stands.

I am looking to buy a Kerker set for my 1982 Pro-Link to replace my D&G. Any issues with fitment ? Will it interfere with the handbags ? Will I need special brackets ?

Thanks.

If you have a 6-1, the Kerker and D&G are almost identical. They use the same header.

My D&G is a 6-1 but the Kerker's I am looking at are 3-1 (6-2) Like those.

The Kerkers you're looking at and in the picture you posted are the original aftermarket Kerkers, always been 6 into 2, a recent vendor began selling the 6 into 1 D&G headers with a Kerker can and some how these became known as Kerker Systems, they are not!

Thanks Jeff,

My concern is about fitment on a Prolink. Interference with the hardbags, Center stand.

I saw a couple of videos on youtube with 1981 and 1982 CBX running those pipes so I guess they fit. Just wondering if I will be able to run them with the bags.

It depends on the mufflers.
Kerker made two different styles. A flatter profile to fit under the bags and a more upswept design for the twin shock model.
Hard to tell from the pic you posted but those do look like the Prolink mufflers. Ask the seller.

The seller does not know.

From the pictures I found on the web, the Prolink version has almost no bend to it past the header connection while the twin shock version is clearly angled upwards.

Does the seller have pictures of the pipe while it was mounted on his CBX?

The Kerkers I have the mufflers attach directly to the rear foot peg bolt if that helps

In reviewing above pics mine do not sweep up to the degree those do and have no rear brackets

Just a side-bar of sorts: Those Kerkers as shown will turn the bottom of the bags 'black' with soot in short time. You will want to clean them every time you ride the bike. Nice looking and sounding , but........
