Alternator boot

I bought a new alternator boot that seals the wires between the cases. How do I get the old one off and the new one on? Is there a way to remove each of the individual wires from the red socket connector and get it on that way? Thanks Ross.

Yes, you have to remove all the wires from the connector. They come out pretty easily, unless yours has melted at the plug. Many, many have, and in that case, you'll need a new connector before you start. If yours is good, just take a very small, thin bladed screwdriver (I use 1/2 of an old thin pair of tweezers) and slide it into the small gap between the brass spade and the plastic body. This releases the tab and allows you to pull the wire out. Obviously mark where they came from or you can use the matching plug to replace them in the proper order.

If any of your spades are melted into the connector, you will never get them out. Take a Dremmel with a cut-off wheel and carefully saw through the plastic at various angles to release the brass spade. They will be OK to reuse, you just need a new plug which are available at several places discussed here before.

Then installing the new rubber isn't real easy once you do all of the above. The wires are a real bear to get through the rubber at a right angle. Grease them up and fiddle around and they'll go.

Thanks Dave. I'll give it a try.
Also, which way round does the oil seal that sits behind the bearing go. The oil seal has a flat side and one with a lip. Do you know whether the flat side faces out our the lip side?

The seal is installed flat side toward the bearing.
