Odd headlight on my '79

The lens is flat glass, the bulb is an H4, and immediately behind the lens is a flat metal three-spoke arrangement with the upper bar standing straight up, and the other two spaced at 120 degrees from the upper bar (and from each other, of course). The bulb itself is shaded on the topside with a half-hemisphere shaped metal "cap".
WTF????

I remember these lenses and H4 bulbs being the "big thing" a while ago. Some changed their headlights. They were smitten with the light output. I think the Harley crowd started this. As the CBX headlight is a more or less standard 7" size, many different lens/reflector units will fit.

Both of mine have simple, inexpensive, easily replaceable (but seldom need be) sealed beam car type headlights. I do very little after dark riding these days and the light they produce is good enough.

I have an H4 bulb in the 8" Suzuki headlight on my naked '81.
Unfortunately the lens was smashed recently by a stone flying up from a passing truck. $162.50 for the lens alone and it is on back order.
I also do not ride at night much anymore. The output of the 8" and H4 is great but it was mainly put on the bike for looks. I think the big train headlight suits the large size of the bike.
When i did ride at night i always found the stock setup adaquate.

I always thought the 8" Suzuki headlight looked cool too. Locomotive. My local salvage yard has one or two still (I believe) and I've been thinking...

If you can get your mitts on an extra 8" setup i would be happy to take it off your hands.

Steve, no luck. They had had one in inventory since 2004 but sold it recently, dang it.

Ain't that always the way.
A couple other bikes that had the 8" headlight were the '85 GS700, '83 Yamaha XJ650 Seca and the '83? Yamaha Euro XV920.
The bucket on the Yammie is a little shallower so it does not leave a lot of room for the wiring harness.

Thanks, Nils.
It is the one i wail on and pretend i am fast.
I wish i could say i did the conversion but most of the work was done by former Club member Robert Hill of Oklahoma City. I have changed the wheels, carbs and headlight but Robert had things very well sorted out.

My camera skills need upgrading... newer pic of the same bike, Mike.
Going to the 18" wheel i dropped the front fender close to an inch but it still not look right. I have a fender from an 1100F that is going on and the profile should match up again.
