TICK TICK noise - alternator side

(after a forum search) I've got an intermittent tick on left side. Starts at idle, will go away at about 3500 rpm. Very sporadic. This is a very distinct and steady tick or click which changes with rpm. Charging is fine. Bike's a stock '82, 22K miles, maintenance history unknown.
Is this the "ratcheting" I came across in the forums. Brushes? Clutch plates?

It sounds like the alternator clutch. Not a serious problem or imminent failure. If the noise bothers you, you can replace the clutch.

...or the bearing in the alternator. Left side is more likely alternator noise than clutch noise. Could also be oldham connectors between the cams

Don't know your history with the CBX, but you should take the alternator off and inspect. Check for excessive clutch wear, sagging spring, evidence that components have gotten hot, bearing noise and brush wear. The late models are easier on brushes, but the other components are just as wear-prone on all years. Let us know what you find.

I will; it's on the winter list. I was wondering if this was a known or common issue.
I'm buttoning up the valve check today -- found two at minimums (again, history unknown) and brought them back toward the maximum -- and then it's into the front end; full brake rebuilds w/ stainless lines and steering head bearing replacement -- it has a very distinct notch.
I'll let you know what I find with the TICK.

That tick coould well be the alternator bearings, as Dave mentioned.
You can spin the alternator by hand once you remove it from the bike. If it's not silky smooth, replace the bearings and seal.
Bearings are readily available at any parts store, 6201 and 6203, for cheap. Seal is available from Honda or any good parts store. I forget the dimensions but it's a common size.

Cover the hole & do a short test run without the alternator fitted. No clicking, you've found the problem... Have a good battery though & take all the gubbins (plate/washer/spring/ spring seat) off...
