I have a 1982, and it starts no problem, but if you ride, the battery drains.
Alternator?
Thanks to all who can help.

Alternator brushes is what I'd check first. The system doesn't recharge much under 2,500-3,000 rpms so a lot of short trips can drain it even with good brushes. The alternator also has a clutch if you didn't know and the plates, two steel automotive type plates, need to be in good shape too.

Thanks, Terry.
I've changed the brushes, and the plates look fine.
The headlight does not go brighter when I rev. If system was charging, should it not go brighter?
Without riding bike, it starts no problem.
Thanks again,
George

what does the voltmeter read when riding. At idle it should be between 11 and 12 and when running down the road between 13/14. If it reads the same running down the road as at idle, there's something rong.

Yes, the headlight should get brighter
A typical CBX idles around 11.5 volts, which is depleting the battery and the headlight isn't really bright
You should have about 13.5 volts at 3,000 RPM . . . . assuming the the alternator is good (do the recommended resistance checks to see if you have a bad stator or rotor) and the clutch isn''t slipping - The headlight is a good deal brighter at 13.5 volts than at 11.5
The clutch behaves quite differently, depending on the state of charge in the battery - If the battery is low, the regulator turns the alternator 'full on' and that extra load can make the clutches slip . . . . so you may not have much over 12 volts even at 3,000 RPM. As the battery charges, the clutch plates slip less and less
Normal checks, in order of likely failures woulld be brushes, rotor, stator and voltage regulator - Unless your clutch spring/shims are a problem, one of those is your likely culprit

Don gave you pretty much the scoop on checking the alternator. I'd add that it is likely your rotor that's bad. Simply check the resistance between the slip rings - it HAS to be between 3.5 and 4.8 OHM. Anything higher or lower and it's bad. CBXMan down here in PA can have yours rewound and back to you in a week or so. If that's not it, let us know and we'll come up with something else for you to check.

Thanks everyone for all the tips.
I'll give them all a try this week.

Give me a day or so and I'll get the info for the company that has done several rotors for me. I assume only your rotor is bad?

Thanks. I haven't taken it off the bike yet. I Will remove and test it this weekend. Have checked all the conections and replaced the battery and brushes and still will not charge. I just purchased a new meter to check it with.

Guys, if you are or know of the source for these rewinds, please by all means post it! The more info the better.

I have the original alternater for mine and was going to offer to let him try it to verify his was bad. He lives only a couple miles from me. Unfortunatly I can't help you out on the rewind.
