Batteries Acting Up

Post by EMS »

I found the third battery this year with exactly the same problem:

Battery shows charging when on the charger.
Battery shows fully charged on the charger when charging complete.
Battery shows 12.8 Volts reading on the voltmeter.
When installed and supposed to crank, battery does not provide any power. All lights go dim, starter doesn't even click.

I am suspecting my 10-bank Deltran messing up my batteries :?
This happened on three different vehicles. Batteries are all different age, vary from 2-5 years. Any ideas anybody?

Sounds like the Battery Tender. Run by my house on your way to Indy and borrow my charger. If it charges the batteries to where they work, then it's the computer controlling your tender. Probably stopping the charge too early. And you might as well visit Terry and his daughter in Yosemite on your way.

Of course if you're pressed for time, you could just run down the road and get a cheap one at an auto parts store and charge one of the batteries to see what happens.

I have a charger that works fine. I do not use the tender to charge. I only hook fully charged batteries to the tender. I was wondering what the failure mode of the battery is.

I need to take the battery (or two) to a place where they can check and tell me what is wrong with them. From there, I may be able to find out what causes it. The unusual thing is, as stated above, that the batteries appear to be fine when I check them with my available methods, but when loaded, they quit.
