79 CBX Alternator rebuild question...

I am doing my first alternator rebuild. New bearings, seal, o-ring and brushes. What is the best way to loosen the rotor shaft locknut on the driven clutch plate? I’ve already replaced the outer bearing and that went fine. Now I am uncertain on how to hold the rotor shaft tightly enough to remove the locknut without damaging anything on the alternator. (To replace the inner bearing, seal and o-ring) Does anyone have any good tips? Many thanks!

An impact wrench will remove the nut easily if you wear heavy gloves while holding the clutch plate. Using a rag in conjunction as a backup would be advisable due to sharp edges on the clutch plate.

Welcome to the site Ralphy...... :thumupp:

Good advice from avidcbxer.... 8) A socket & ratchet/handle with a sharp tap also works.....

Any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask ......

Thank you both for your quick reply. As you know, the problem is not getting enough torque on the wrench; it's keeping the rotor from turning, and not damaging the alternator while doing it.

I'm going to try the impact wrench approach. I'm pretty sure that will work, but it also sounds like it should be a two-person job. Unfortunately, my 5 year old son is still only a 1/2 person when it comes to motorcycle assistance!

Thanks again.

Any one-person methods out there?

It's been a while since i did this but place a wrench on the rotor nut & then place a wrench on the clutch disc nut, turn to remove & one will give up the ghost. Double nut (locking two nuts together) the free thread to remove the stubborn nut .....

Remove the alternator outer cover again. Clamp the rotor in soft jaws in your vice. Give 'er on the nut. Upon re-assembling, remember the washer goes on bevelled (cupped) side down, use locktite 242 on the threads, torque to the specs in the shop manual. Re-assemble outer cover to alternator.

Or use an impact.
