I am in the process of hooking up all the wiring on the CBX. I'm having problems regarding the ground wires and the wire that goes from the starter. I have a parts CBX in which I am trying to follow to rewire the other CBX.. Which is the correct way to wire? On the parts CBX I noticed a ground wire running grounded to the starter. Is this correct and does this ground wire go directly to the neg lead of the battery? Also on the bike there is a thick lead running from the starter magnetic switch leading to , " I don't know where".

On the other bike , a thick lead is running from the starter magnetic switch directly to the battery. Which method is correct.

Also on the top terminal of the starter, I believe the lead going to this terminal is the color coded purple red. Is there another lead going to this terminal?

Duane,

The ground wire should go directly from the negative terminal of the battery to the lug on the starter mount. The positive wire should go directly to the starter motor from the start solenoid.

The other thick wire could be a red/white wire running to a fuse (if your bike is an early model).

What year bike are you working on?

Duane, both wirings are the same. The ground wire from the negative pole of the battery connects to ground with the starter mount, i.e.: it runs from the battery to the starter.
The positive battery cable runs to the starter magnetic switch, which is one "thick"cable. The other "thick" cable that runs "you don't know where" goes to the starter motor.

I "reconditioned" my starter solenoid in an attempt to correct a "spooky" starter. Now it doesn't work at all... (small wonder...). Musta had something to do with the destructive disassembly...

Anyone have a spare starter solenoid they would be willing to part with?

When replaced, I do not think this will solve my symptom. Lately, when I try to start my '81, the starter turns the engine a couple revolutions, then spins free. I suspect something to do with the starter clutch. I was extremely disappointed to find that this is buried deep in the bowels of the case, apparently requiring a case split to access.

Please tell me there is an easier way!!!

My 82 has had a 'slipping' starter clutch for years. Cold weather, infrequent starting/riding and synthetic oil contributes greatly to this condition. On tour, starting daily, unless its was a very cold night, it starts right away in the morning, no slipping, or maybe just a couple slips and then it fires right up. Throughout the day of riding, with maybe 6-10 stops and starts, the slipping never occurs. During warmer months and if I start it at least once a week, never a problem. The best way to deal with it is to start it up frequently. So, there is good news and bad news, you do have to get into the bottom end to repair or replace it but, it may last for thousands of miles as long as you have a good battery. Mine has had this condition for over 35,000 miles. Initially I replaced the starter and everything else trying to fix it. No more. When the bottom end has to be disassembled, I'll fix it then.

cbx6ss, A hefty wire used temporarily across the two top terminals will tell you if your solenoid is bad.
