electrical fire; fused wires

Well guess what, i had an electrical fire on my beautiful '81 CBX. Yesterday, about 8 inches north of the starter relay/main fuse compartment, the wiring harness must have shorted out because i had a small fire that melted the wires in the harness.
Has anyone had this happen to them and if so, any suggestions on how i should fix it? I am thinking of attempting to remove the 3 inches or so of melted wires and splice in new ones. Is this a viable alternative or should i be looking to have the entire wiring harness replaced? How many wires are in there?
Thanks in advance for your help.
