Alternator bearing replacement

I'm replacing the bearings and oil seal on my 80 CBX. I have the alternator off the bike and the outside cover is removed. I'm trying to get to the bearing and seal behind the alternator. When I tried to undo the driven clutch plate nut the nut on the alternator shart came undone instead! How do I get to the seal and bearing?

You need to clamp the rotor carefully, like holding it in a vise with something to protect it. This way, the nut and plate should come off and you can remove the shaft to get to the seal in the rear housing. I assume that's what you are talking about... :?: :? :?:

Thanks EMS. You're right I'm trying to get the nut off the alternator clutch plate that mates with the inner one connected to the engine on a spring. From what I've read this is the one I have to remove to disemble the alternator to gain access to the inner seal and bearing.
I tried what you suggested wrapping the thicker part of the spindle (not the end that goes in the outer case bearing) with aluminum but the spindle just turned in the vice. I'm reluctant to clamp the actual spindle directly between the vice jaws. Any other suggestions?

Try holding the outer edge of the clutch plate with a rag and using an air impact wrench on the nut

Don, I took the alternator to the local car repair shop and their impact driver had the nut off in 3 seconds!

You may need to go back and have them tighten it the same way after you get the bearing and seal replaced
