31mm Carbs Tuning

Post by Cammer »

A few months ago, my buddy bought a set of so-called "bolt on and go" 31 mm carbs from a supplier who shall remain nameless that were anything but.................Took about 14 hours of fiddling to get the cobbled up affair to run properly. After doing actual measurements, they turned out to be actually 29mm where it counts. The Mikunis do look "trick" and finally run well and livens up the 1170cc engine with the 6-6 pipes, but am not sure they were worth the $$$$ and effort. Just my opinion naturally. Years ago I used to think that the Dyno-Jet Stage III jet kits were the cat's meow so to speak, but after spending time with them, went back to the stock big end jets and just ran the larger midrange to cure the blubbering the engine did. This too was on an 1170 engine with the five piece filters. He also has about $50,000 worth of new/used parts and six "rollers" or so along with his 800cc BMW dual sport, his new 1000cc BMW Super Bike and his Suzuki 400 Dual Sport and his four rebuilt never started CBX engines. It's hell having money. JMHO

I dont think the big carbs are worh the money spent for a street application - and these days it aint worth it to
try and go out and drag race a CBX !

Tuning the stock carbs is the way to go for a good "all around" bike you can enjoy. I've read many good and bad
things about jet kits. Most owners i've talked to either love the jet kits or hate them.

Im not sure why some can get the kits to work and the end results are great ~ others cant get them to work and
end up going back to stock. If it was'nt such a PITA getting the carbs in and out people might be willing to take a
little more time fiddeling with them.

While i've been warned to leave the carbs alone, I may try on the jet kits in the future following my build !

Took me 15-20 years to get my 29mm Smoothbore Mikuni's "perfectly" streetable. I exaggerate as I lived with the problems for years... 34MM flatsides I had a short flirtation with. Gobs more power but I thought " Do you want to go through this learning curve again "??

When it comes to carbs "nothing" is bolt on & ride. There are always drawbacks ( in the seach of HP) that are not advertised.... However, if you want a CBX engine to kick you in the a$$, it's all to do with carburetion...
