Using clear tubing to set float level on bench?

I saw the pic's showing the level in the middle of the mount screws when using tubing, but the bike was running. What I want to do is hook up the gas tank at regular height above the carbs bypassing the vacuum valve straight to the carb inlet. Also the carbs mounted at the proper angle (22 degrees?), and do this on the bench. Will this give me an acurate level? I'm having trouble setting the float level by measuring because of the spring loaded float needles. Do you stop when they touch or when they compress?

Stop when they touch, not compressed. The only accurate way to set float height is with a gauge. Clear tubing will only tell you that the float valve is working properly. You can't use it to set the float height. It just is not accurate enough.

Totally agree....It's also good for comparison between carbs, suggesting a incipent failure...
