New Throttle Cable Play

Post by ericfreeman »

I recently fitted new cables from Tims and I haven't been able to eliminate the initial play from them, even though all the adjustments are at their maximums. I have about 1/4-3/8" of free play in the throttle grip before the carbs begin to actuate. Bugs the hell out of me since I've removed all the play on my Ironhead Sportsters and the throttles are smooth and immediate. Wondering if anyone else has this problem and if there is a solution. Limited sources of throttle cables for these bikes out there so I'm not sure if I'm up the creek, so to speak.

Thanks for any help.

Eric

Are you using the stock routing, Eric? Stock bars?
It seems odd that the cables would be adjusted to the max. length. Maybe try a different routing pattern.

any chance you could post a picture? Do you have the sport/euro throttle or USA throttle? On the sport/euro the cables come out the top of the throttle and the USA they come out the bottom.

Running stock bars (bottom exit cables), got rid of the Sport kit the bike had on it since I don't fit the low bars at my age! Routed the new cables pretty much as per the originals. Had to max out both sets of adjustment points to eliminate huge amount of freeplay in the throttle. If it wasn't such a pain to change them, I'd lube up the OEM cables I have in a box and fit them to see if there's a difference.

same source...Same problem for my 81... I solved by backing out the screwed-in cable ends a bit from the throttle control housing on the bars.

new cable

On the change of the throttle cables, I had also changed the throttle sleeve at the bars with the same results as your find on your bike.

I changed the throttle sleeve back to my original and the problem disapeared, when looking at my new sleeve I noticed the hole for the cable had been mis-located.
Hope this helps

I also fitted a new sleeve! I'll check out the original sleeve when the weather turns bad and I can't ride. Thanks for the advice.
