Removing #2 and #5 carb tops while carbs are on bike

Post by rzinger »

Hi, I'm doing a bit of on-bike carb cleaning (removing carb tops, shooting Berryman's through the various bleeds, the on-bike cleaning method I guess it is called). Mike Nixon states that the #2 and #5 carb tops can be removed on the bike but I can't figure out how and don't want to break anything. I've gotten the screws out no problem - but can't lift the carb tops high enough to get them off before they hit the frame tabs for the motor mounts. Any insight here?

Thanks in advance.

If you have an early model, its tough, but can be done. Loosen the two bolts that hold the airbox to the top of the frame. Then loosen the carb clamps to the manifold. It would help if the engine was warm, but I guess you are too far for that. Then CAREFULLY pry down on the whole assembly and the carbs will flex enough to just get the tops off. It's not pretty, but it will work. Pick a pry point where you are levering on a central point or use a small piece of wood to spread the load.

The late model carbs are angled flatter and its fairly easy to get the tops off.

Perfect - thanks for the responses folks. It's a 1979 which I should have specified. I have 4 carbs done and just wanted to get the other 2 while I was at it...
