79 CBX AIRBOX

Post by twinegar »

I am picking up a 79 CBX next week and have been gathering up different parts in order to restore the bike to OEM specs. I have located pretty much everything but the airbox assembly. Anyone know where to get the entire assembly from the carb clamps back to the filter box and waste reservoir?
Thanks.

Few years ago I put K&N filters on mine. Went thru a divorce and threw everything out to start fresh. Go figure a year later I wanted the air box back as didn't like the individual filters in the rain. Ended up getting an assembly on e-bay. They turn up once in awhile. As well Louis here on the site may be able to help.

Thanks bobber. I have a house full of CB750's from 1969 to 1982 so this is my first venture into the CBX world so I am having to educate myself. I located the airbox unit minus the filter unit for a 81/82 CBX and at Bike Bandit.com the parts fiche shows the same number for the 79/80 and 81/82 the drawing look a little different. CBXMan has them listed but with no pictures to confirm that I am getting everything front to back and they won't answer my emails.
I have ordered a bunch of resto parts and the airbox assembly is the only thing that escapes me. There are 4 K&L units on it so can at least drive it a little bit but I am a OEM fanatic.

You might try emailing Donna directly as CBXMAN posted this recently,

"We have been advised by our buddy Rip Parsells that people are having trouble ordering at our site. Coincidentally, a customer from Vancouver, BC stopped by last night and told me he had also been having ordering problems at CBXMAN.com .

Here's the skinny: The software that we use for the CBXMAN.com website is awful. It is made by a company named StoreFront and is not up to the task of handling an inventory the size that we carry. We can add quantities to the stock on hand this week and check next week and find we are showing zero on hand. We will be moving the CBXMAN.com over to the same software that we use quite successfully at CBXMANMOTORCYCLES.com in the first half of next year. It's a
monumental job that should alleviate the problems. I don't want to toot our horn too much but those of you that have been here for our tech rallies know that we have a huge supply of CBX used and new parts. Do we have everything? No. We don't have any side pocket covers for the 81-82. We don't have turn signals for the 79-80 at the moment although we have plenty of stems. On the other hand we are about to finally begin production of engine guards for the 79/80 and the 81/82 so we're not resting over here!

If you encounter ordering difficulties at CBXMAN.com I suggest you email donna@cbxman.com with a list of what you want and a phone number where she can reach you. That way she can check stock and call you back and advise you what our stock status is and what your cost will. I appreciate your persistence and that folks like Rip take the time many to notify us. Who knows how many people try to get thru to us and just give up? Don't give up! Send Donna an email!
Thank to all of our customers! We're here for you.........

You're gonna have soooo much fun :!: I love mine. Tour on them extensively. I recently sold a couple 1970 750s to Carpy Carpenter for their future life as cafe racers. Welcome to the organization. :D

Original Honda part-numbers confirm that airboxes are different between 79/80 and 81/80:

79/80 = 17300-422-000
81/82 = 17300-MA2-000

In addition to the different carb connection, the Prolink airbox also has removable "sidecovers"

Thanks for the information. It looks like CBX Man has what I need so once they confirm I will grab on.

I will be buying a used original exhaust system but would rather have the 6 into 6. Anyone know where to buy the 6 into 6?

Jan Ringnalda used to bring them in from South Africa. Ever so often he is here on the site. Maybe someone has better contact information.

Jan imports the Pipemasters from Australia. I think he has sold all he has right now, but will be getting more. Price going through the roof, though, as the US dollar tanks. I can get you in touch with him if you're interested.

If I new how much it might help me decide. I can get a good used OEM set for around $1K but might go $1500.00 on 6 into 6.
Thanks all.

I can tell you with reasonable certainty that you're looking at the $1800 range for any future sets. I'll PM you Jan's contact info. Lots of us would like to know where to find a very good set of stock pipes for $1K! That's what they SHOULD bring, but eBay has driven them up to the stratosphere. ANY good exhaust for the CBXs are way overpriced, but that's the way it is.
