Need Take out engine to Reg Carbs?

Post by BASTOK »

Hi everybody.

First of all sorry about my English, It is not my native language.

I have a 1980 CBX, with 28.000 miles.

The Carbs have never been regulated (or cleaned)

I only want to know if I necessary have to take out the full engine to do that, or there is another way to do the job.

Thanks!

Hi Bastok,

welcome to the site.

You can try an over the counter carb cleaner that you mix with your gasoline to clean your carbs if you have a very minor problem. For a real cleaning, the engine will need tilted and the carbs will need removed.

The carbs are then synchronized on the engine with the engine running (per the shop manual). Most other adjustments such as idle speed and mixture adjustments would also be done with a running engine.

If you have more detailed questions, please let us know.

The engine does not have to come out. The actual amount of effort involved, however, is always a topic of heated discussions.

The service manual tells you to "tilt" the engine to remove the carbs.

Some say they can accomplish this without tilting the engine.

I am one of those who has never even tried to do that. I run stock airboxes on both my CBXes and I can't even get these off without tilting the engine. Let's hear what other opinions are.

Stock airbox, tilt the engine. Individual filter pods, leave the engine in place......

I've gotten the carbs off with the stock airbox BUT to replace the carbs with the stock airbox it's neccessary to tilt the engine. When I removed the carbs with the stock airbox, I had to get the airbox out first (before the carbs) and had to twist it all out of shape. It's plastic and popped back into shape. Then I re-jetted the carbs and installed individual filters. Now I'm taking some of my CBX's and replacing the individual filters with stock airbox's.

Wow! They must have cost a fortune. I just bought a set of 12-inchers on sale and they were $34.-. Same brand, I think.

Hello. I am also new to this forum and English is not my native language, so I apologize for any mistakes or non sense words.

I bought my first ever CBX late december and its under restoration process. I am reassembling it and carbs are on the schedule for maybe next week.

How should I use these clamps to help getting the job done? Fitting six carbs on six tight rubber manifolds won't be easy (it was tough to remove them...).

I have got detailed instructions from a friend that knows everything about CBX's.

My bike has 493 original miles and I am trying to do everything right, without rushing the process.

Thanks for your help on this.

Valente, A piece of wood across the front of the engine ( a bit wider to mount the clamps on the ends) & a piece of wood across the mouths of the carbs. I have aftermarket carbs which are straight, I would assume ( Chris help me out here....) you would machine one piece to match the stock carb "V" formation so not to distort ?? Afix these clamps left & right & squeeze one at a time to pull/align the carbs into the boots. I have found that silicone grease eases the task tremendously, also others have said that warm boots are more pliable & also ease the task..... Others have said that swearing, cursing & general bad language, intimidates the boots to give up their struggle....

PS Your english is fine..... :thumupp: I wish I could say the same for my spanish... :?

Cutting some wood to match the shape of the carbs sounds workable. They just need to be worked onto the carb boots evenly and with as little force as possible.
