Carb Leak

Post by BackRoadBruce »

I've pulled the carb bank from my 1982 CBX. I bench tested the carbs to make sure they were all holding their "water". I get a slight drip from the #1 carb via the overflow tube. Is the float or an obstruction to the valve controlled by the float the most likely source of this problem?

P.S. - All I know about carburetors is that its something they put in fancy bottled water over in Europe.
I twist the throttle just to hear the six sing.

carbs

Bruce -- A sticking float, whether through fuel gum or debris in the fuel, is fairly common. Try a couple of raps on the bowl with the wooden handle end of a hammer, and see if the overflow stops due to dislodging the speck of debris. If not, then cleaning and inspection is in order. At the very least, see if the float levels are correct. :)

Thank Mike. The carbs are off and I've cleaned up the exteriors. I'll pull the float bowls next weekend and see what's in there.

carbs and florence

Florence, CO? Must be a prison guard. Don't think they allow prisoners to have CBX's. I toured one of the prisons (not the bad one) with my son in law and it was pretty scary seeing all these bad guys. Carbs are a pain in the butt. I am doing my 81s now. I think I prefer the 79s.

Florence is where "SuperMax" is located. The worst of the worst are there.

I currently have 3 X's. 18 carbs to clean, maintain and synch. Gotta like pain a little to be an X owner. :)

That is bad news to have 1 carb missing from each X. :)

Another source for a small leak can be a cracked overflow tube in the bowl.

I had that happen. That was one of my most frustrating things to diagnose and fix. I couldn't figure out how the overflow tube could crack but it did. Looked at everything else over and over before by process of elimination, I found out it was the tube.

There's three kinds of people......those who can count, and those who can't.

Either garage is too small or we have too many bikes. Or Momma's car needs to go outside.

No true :!: George runs only 5 carbs per bike, so the others have a chance to keep up with him  He was tired of waiting for everyone to catch up when he rides in a group 8)

Better late than never. I rebuilt the carbs, which resolved the drip. Mostly likely dirt was the cause.
