Post by Lloyd in South Carlina »

I have a 79, its nice but not a perfect museum peace, I ride it too much. Has anyone tried the fuel pump kits being sold on Ebay? If so, do they work as advertised?

Thanks for your time, L.

Here's the detail on whats being sold........................................ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP UPGRADE KIT. HAVING PROBLEMS ON STARTS OR VAPOR LOCKING . JUST NOT HAVING THE POWER IT SHOULD.MOST OF THE PROBLEMS WITH THESE BIKES ARE FUEL.THESE BIKES HAVE 6 CARBS AND NEED ALOT OF FUEL FOR THAT ENGINE.I KNOW FOR A FACT THIS KIT WILL WORK. THINK ABOUT IT,THE FUEL IS FLOWING BY GRAVITY TO YOUR CARBS AND YOU THINK YOUR CARBS ARE FULL OF GAS AS YOU RIDE DOWN THE ROAD.THERE NOT FULL OF GAS AND THERE FIGHTING TO GET THE FUEL INTO THOSE 6 HOT CARBS. SO YOUR BIKE IS ALWAYS RUNNING LEAN.WHEN A MOTORCYCLE RUNS LEAN, IT RUNS HOT.HERES THE REAL KICKER,THESE BIKES ARE AIR COOLED.DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW HOT THE VALVES AND PISTONS MUST GET.HEAT CAUSES ENGINE DAMAGE AND IT SHORTENS ENGINE LIFE.THESE KITS COME COMPLETE AND READY TO INSTALL.THE FUEL PUMP PRESSURE KEEPS THE CARBS FULL OF GAS WITH-OUT ANY FLOODING. WILL NOT FLOOD OR BLEED BY YOUR FLOATS.THIS IS A GREAT PUMP AND WILL NOT ALLOW FUEL TO FLOW WHEN POWER TO THE PUMP IS SHUT OFF.EVEN IF YOUR BIKE RUNS OKAY. IT WILL RUN 100% BETTER WITH THIS FUEL PUMP KIT.THIS KIT IS SUPPLIED WITH FULL AND EASY TO UNDERSTAND INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS AND ALL MOUNTING HARDWARE.ONCE YOU'VE INSTALLED THIS FUEL PUMP KIT YOU'LL THINK YOU HAVE A NEW BIKE.IF YOU DONT HAVE AN ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP ON YOUR CBX YOUR DAMAGING YOUR ENGINE EVERY TIME YOU RIDE.ITS A FACT.I WORK ON THESE BIKES AND SEE THE AFTERMATH AFTER ONLY 50.000.DO YOURSELF AND YOUR CBX A BIG FAVOR AND INSTALL THE KIT.YOU CAN INSTALL IT YOURSELF EASY. ITS CHEAPER THAN A TOP ENGINE REBIULD. IT WILL ADD LIFE AND PERFORMANCE TO YOUR ENGINE. ****WARNING**** DO NOT SUBSTITUE ANY OTHER PUMP FOR THIS ONE. OTHER PUMPS WILL DAMAGE AND BLOW OUT YOUR CARBS AND CAUSE ENGINE DAMAGE. THIS PUMP IS PRE SET TO OPTIMUM PRESSURE FOR THESE MACHINES.5 YEAR FREE REPLACMENT ON PUMP IF IT SHOULD FAIL. IN MY OPINION, Thats a big load of crap. Just talk to anyone who as ever put a stage three jet kit in a CBX and they will tell you there is no problem feeding these things fuel. I'm still trying to lean it out. Don't waste your money.

Ok

I have not tried one, but I would agree that once running I have doubts about this advertised improvement. However, it might be another solution to the "Hard Starting" problem when the bike has sat for a while? It might be nice to simply turn on the fuel, turn on the key, wait a few seconds and have the bike immediately start. If this works with no other side effects?

Thought maybe someone here had tried it?

Fuel Pumps

Post by Jim-Jim »

I agree, this sounds like a ton of poopy-poo. While I'm no expert by any measure, the idea defies simple logic. The 'X' has been around for 22 years and hundreds (thousands?) of modifications, alterations, etc. have been done in the carburation area and NOT ONCE have I ever read or heard about ANYONE using a fuel pump. Now, there are a lot of very smart people out there fiddling with their big 6 engine and don't you think at LEAST ONE of them would have thought about a fuel pump? At least if anyone thought there was a 'fuel starvation' problem? If you have a hard starting 'X', there are causes other than low fuel flow/pressure. Now, if your petcock or line or connection into the tank is partially plugged, maybe a fuel pump would overcome that but I don't believe it - slow in doesn't translate into fast out - the pump would just suck and suck and suck.

Forget it - don't waste your money. Maybe if all the guru's would post to convince you to spend your money on something more profitable, you might belive. But if you're convinced it will help you, buy away!!!

pump

Post by cbxwest »

My 2 cents worth is it might work if you use the Fire Injector plugs you get from JC Whitney!!!! with the little propeller gizmos that they had to go under the carbs. on your old 59 Chevy for extra H.P.!!!! Yeah Right. I drag raced a 79 for years and took high speed cross country trips without running out of fuel in my carbs. We are not runnin Fuel Funny Cars with gallons of fuel goin through the carbs.! I have a fuel pump on my 80 model BUT it runs for my NOS system on demand. Save your money for some handlebar streamers. Bob

I'm curious. What does this discussion have to do with you not renewing your membership?Everyone needs a little chiding now and then.

Perhaps Lloyd is pissed BECAUSE there is a CBX Club with knowledgable members who can see a scam from miles away. Ha! fuel pump! We've been damaging our engines because we don't have a fuel pump. Just a note on the electric fuel pump. A few years back I met a fellow at a CBX rally that added an electric fuel pump to his X. He said it immediately improved his difficult starting problems. Having read over the years about people priming the carbs with various devices to get fuel to cyl. X and so on it seemed a good idea. The next morning when we were all getting ready for a group ride there was the usual sounds of starters doing their starting thing, people twisting the throttle and repeating the process as the bikes came to life. There was one exception, the fellow with the fuel pump. He turned the key pressed the starter and the bike came to life immediately. The claims on ebay are over stated to be sure however I know 30 people including me who will tell you don't be so sure on the cold starting benefit. Life is good, enjoy!!!!

Fuel pump

Post by cbxwest »

I don't know if we are giving the guy a bunch of dung because he asked a question. Maybe questioning all the facts?? in the email about the fuel pump. I have 4 X's in my collection now as I got rid of a few. I have one each year and only ride 3 of them about once a month to clean em out and ride my 81 daily as my work bike. All of my X's have just the petcock at the tank and as I turn the fuel on, the carbs. fill up, then a few twists and she usually goes. I can see how a fuel pump would help start the X as fuel would be right there for you. But all that other stuff is hard to go for. Honda would have put a pump on the X if they thought it would be needed. Just another thing to go wrong on the highway? If someone wants to drop out of the club for a thing like this I can only say sorry. But again you know you'll be on the web site checkin it out. My other 2 cents worth. Bob

I saw those fuel pumps on Ebay and my first thought was, why is there no evidence anywhere to back up this persons claim? The only reference to a fuel pump I can find is in the tech tips to alleviate, as mentioned before, cold starting problems. I have a feeling Lloyd is probably the one selling them and tried to shamelessly 'plug' his product on these boards, and got pissed when everybody laughed and negated the need for it......?

I gave my opinion on the fuel pumps, I sure didn't attack anyones personality. I don't think anyone else did either. If he's that thin skinned he should have been around here a couple years ago.
