Number 4 cylinder dead when idling but ok on choke and above 2,500 rpm = blocked pilot jet?
Read everywhere that snake oil cleaners run through the carbs are useless. Then read with disbelief that to get the carbs off you have to remove tank, bolts, cables and tilt the engine! I'm very time poor - are there any other ways to fix this? If I run cleaner and clean fuel for a few hundred miles any chance of this working?

You are not likely to clear a completely plugged idle jet without complete removal. And that's what you likely have. You can have them off in an hour or so with diligent homework on the procedure and reasonable skill.

Thanks for the info Dave. I ran some carb cleaner through and it is firing on all cylinders now - whew!
On a very light/trailing throttle there is a little hesitancy - any ideas on this - mixture screws need adjustment?
