What do you think about my set up?

Post by 426 Hemi »

79 cbx kerker 6 to 1 pipe 2 inch baffle , K&N filters 3 pack style, Dyna coils and ignition and wires ...

Jetting info from Tims CBX

Drill slide holes to 11/64

100 mains jets

74 primary jets

331 needles set on the first grove.

Air screws A 2 1/2 turns

Tims has been very helpfull, but i would like to get your feed back on this carb set up ...I'm at sea level with temps in the mid 80s and allway high % humidity.

Thanks for any info...Lee..

Lee, With a set of 79 carbs that have the OEM needles shimmed 25 thousands and the mix screws out 2 1/4 it will be close to the Tim's suggested setup but not quite as rich.

Both setups address the same issue, the 79 CBX is lean off idle to 1/4 throttle, after that the carbs work pretty good and are rich enough.

The 79 has the thinnest tapered needles of all years and if you shim them you get the richness off idle.

The drilled slides make them rise quicker, you can achieve this with shorter vacuum assist springs.

One setup up cost $2.00 and uses OEM parts, the other a bit more and you are drilling your slides.

Your running K&N's so its not like you have to struggle with the air box each time you change the carbs, try the $2.00 setup first.

Thanks Jeff .. That set up sounds good .. one thing if i may ask? I have some 20 thou shims to go under the needles .. I tried one under the stock needle and screwed the plug back in ...Now the needle has no slack in it like the factory set up? is that ok? I'm with you one the drilling the slides, i would not realy like to do that..shorter or weaker spring sounds like a better deal to me...

One my last 79 CBX i had an open pipe most of the time and a K&N drop in filter with the lid removed ...I never touched the jetting or the carbs and that thing ran great... I put tons of street miles and lots of racing with no problems at all..

I just got done cleaning the carbs and it does have stock jets and i was shocked to see they where stock, from the amount of black soot in the header i took off i was thinking i would find 122 jets !!

Thanks Jeff for the info ..Lee..

I like the needle to float like the OEM setup. Just overwrap the needle cap screw with teflon tape, 2 turns of tape will do.

Put the shims on the needle, drop the needle in the slide, screw the needle cap screw down until the needle won't move, then back off on the cap screw until the needle begins to float again, your done.

Did you check to see that your accel pump on the carbs is working?, most overlooked cause to poor off idle performance.

Jeff yes i got the acell pump working after hours of cleaning it.. I got the carbs back together tonight and ready to install .. the only thing i'm unsure of is the float level setting... I don't have a float gage... So what i did is take a reading of all the floats and set them at the average reading that i found of all 6 floats ... Then took a straight edge and made sure all where the same level .. I didn't see a number for float drop level..

I saw in a post that someone used a clear hose to set the float level .. I'm guessing he put a clear hose on the bowl drain on opened the drain, held the hose up and could see the level ...What i don't know is where he took the level to, middle of the bowl or at the parting line where the bowl bolts to the main body or somewhere in the middle?...Lee..

set the floats at 17mm from the carb base, use a depth gauge, calipers or make your own gauge from a piece of plastic. Cut an H out of a plastic jug, so that the legs of the H are 17mm to the bridge of the H and the width of the carb body. The legs of the H sit on the outside edges of the carb body and the bridge of the H is where the floats will rest when 17mm's off the carb body.

Thanks Guys .. I made a float gage like Jeff outlined and set the floats .. I'm going to install the carbs with stock jetting and stock needle to get it up and running , set the timing and ballance the carbs to get a base line...Then install some new clean plugs then start with shiming the needles and see what the motor likes ...At least now i have a base line on where to start ..Thanks again guys ...Lee..
