In the past I had concerns regarding exhaust smoke. Before I replace valve seals piston rings etc. If needed, I understand that if the carbs may be out of sync this could also cause smoking exhaust. I believe they are out because I get a considerable amount of clutch rattle. The clutch rattle was considerably much less 2 years ago. Is there a way to adust carbs without gauges? Such as so many turns?
Thanks Duane

Duane, I don't think that carburetors being out of synchronization can cause exhaust smoking. And, I don't think it is practical to try to synchronize six carburetors without gauges or some other indicator. It would be trial and error, and you would never really know if they are right. There is no "so many turns" way to synchronize carbs.
Now, if a better authority comes along and proves me wrong, I will be interested.

I think that "may" be true on carbs that are hugely out of sync with "so so" valve quide seals but on a CBX it would be more than clutch rattle you would notice.
Slide carbs can be synch'd (on the bench) with drill rods or ball bearings dropping in unison on opening but I would think that would be a futile practice on CV's...
However, I've been wrong before....

Second the "on the bike with gauges" protocol for CV carbs. My GSXR has 38mm Mikuni flatslides, and I do in fact use the 'tiny drill bit' method and it works beautifully. But then again, the slides are all connected to my right wrist.
On the other hand, use the bench-sync method to get cv carbs CLOSE but still use gauges and do it right once they're on the bike.
That's what I think, anyway..... :)
