You are right, Peter! But the small radius of the oval filter is the same as the radius of the round one. Thus making it fit. You end up having a little more filter surface.piit wrote:I own ´79 and the element is circle. I have understood that the prolink element is a bit oval. I might be in wrong, but doubt it

That's what everyone said when I started asking about pulling off that &^%$ air box.EMS wrote:CV carbs and pods don't go together very well either.
I did what I wanted and took everyone's advice thinking they had years on me to make it work. Not.
Everyone said shim the needle 1mm and that's all I needed to do. Not.
I started listening to and feeling what the motor was telling me and went up 4 main jet sizes along with the 1mm needle shim.
Oh my gawd........what a diff. Works well enough for me to stay with all the big bore kits I've run with.........and get 39 mpg doing it.

After 30 yrs of so many here with hands-on ownership you'd think someone in this incredible club would have figured out something as simple as main jets when the airbox has been removed.
And it's not like removing the airbox is such a strange thing to do since the carbs need to be cleaned or overhauled if the bike sits for 4--6 months.........which happens all the time due to all kinds of situations, not to mention no riding winter months. The airbox gets in the way of so many things and by removing it, the carbs can be removed and installed in 1/10th the time.
No removing the incredibly pain in the arse stock exhaust.
No need to install new gaskets on exhaust headers @ head.
No disconnecting or removing a nasty chain.
No disconnecting the shift linkage.
No tilting the motor.
So many things are simple and easy with the airbox removed.

On that very same note...there is an expert who has credibility as he worked on many CBXes and he told me that you can leave the exhaust on. Just take off the rear mounts at the footpeg bracket and the exhaust will "swing up" when you tilt the engine...Mike Cecchini wrote:

That sounds like a really really good idea Mike. I'll have to try in on the brand new 81 I have. I might have to remove the carbs to deal with one pilot jet that will not clean-up.EMS wrote:On that very same note...there is an expert who has credibility as he worked on many CBXes and he told me that you can leave the exhaust on. But I'll be damned if I keep that pain in the arse air box on any X I ride regularly like I do my 80 and work on.
Thanks for the tip Mike
