IS removal of Choke plates feasible ? / much Benefit

Post by cnshores »

I have the carbs on my 79 completely disassmebled, and am tempted to reassemble with the choke plates and shafts removed.......has anyone had experience doing this, and with what results ??

No Choke

Jon Bratten pulled the chokes and shafts from his '79 CBX drag bike and was pleased with the results.

I pulled the chokes out of my '58 Olds Tripower. It created many starting problems in cold weather, but that's another story.

In my studies the choke plates are restrictive, I remember George ( CBXtacy) & I having a discussion on the same subject. I'm sure George has done this & will enlighten us....
My guess is with the choke plates removed & the throttle butterfly's flowed (reduced in cross section) another 5 bhp could "possibly" be realised..

and that's what I got on the bike I removed the plates and shaft from. 5 HP. HARD (notice cap's) starting also. I have plenty of X's. If it was my only one, I wouldn't do it.

CBXTacy........what did you use to plug the holes where the choke shaft used to be ?

What "procedure" did you need to use to get the engine started without the choke ? Did you change the jetting ?

Thanks

the engine was already jetted with individual filters. Didn't change them. Filled the holes with liquid aluminum in a tube from an auto accessory store. Kept a bottle of starting fluid in it. Played with the acceleraqter pump to get it as free working as possible. I'd turn the gas on (no vacuum cock), wait a minute, pupm the throttle a bit, and try the starter. I'd spin it a few seconds, then spray starter fluid and do it again. It usually started right up with the fluid. Have to be careful with it so you don't wash oil off the cylinders.
