Ricks Tricks Carb Help Needed
I'm posting a question for my dad. He owns a 1979 CBX that he bought new and built up for drag racing. The bike sat for 17 years, and we recently pulled it out of storage a month or so ago. He has time slips for 10 in the quarter. We now want to run 9's with our new air shifter and slick (rather than a sport tire), and are dreaming of 8's. First, we need another set of the hard rubber intake manifolds for his Ricks Tricks 29mm Mikuni Smooth Bores. We want to drill them for nitrous, and don't want to hurt the only set we have. Second, we are trying to re-jet the carbs, and we want to know what the jet sizes were when the carbs were brand new as a starting point. We have a large selection of jets to chose from. He bought the set of carbs in the late 1980's. Thank you for your help ahead of time.

I think they are still available from Rick although he's tough to get in touch with. I know Ricardo Sawyer (cbx1260cc) is a good friend. As for drilling, I did the same to tap in vacuum gauges so no harm done there. Lemme check my parts bin, I know I wrote down the original main jetting somewhere...Darn, I fitted them 26 years ago..

Just a quick tip, I changed the Mikuni float needles to the stock Keihin as they have neoprene tips ( they drop right in with no mods) as I prefer them over the metal seats of the Mikuni's. I could never get them to shut off properly even with lapping & was always aware of hydro lock on # 1 cylinder. I also have dropped one size on the mainjet on 1 & 6 cylinders as they run cooler & pull less air due to the serpentine inlet tracts. Mine is a 1980 A (Maryland) model & I changed the inlet cams ( only) to 79's & this improved the off idle flat spot which is difficult to cure...

OK I wrote this 26 years ago & haven't been in the carbs in a while ( other than to clean) so here it is verbatim...
Main Jet 115
Float Fuel Needle 2.5
Idle 17.5
That's all I have recorded.....Other than size 112.5 for mains on cylinders 1 & 6. which wasn't stock.
OHH! Watch out for float corrosion in these old carbs ( normally at the bottom,) dunk them in very hot water & look for bubbles, or submerge them & look for a rainbow on the water. You can chase your ars* on jetting, ( trust me I know.. ) when it is in fact leaking floats. They are still available by the way...

I think you're talking about the emulsifier tube where the needle goes in ? Without opening them up I really couldn't tell you, I'm sure there will be some further input from other guys though... Lemme try to contact Ricardo, if no luck he comes in here ever so often & Mike may have a contact number...
