Got '82 CBX, not running
Hello Guys,
I already introduced my self in the new members section and here i'm starting my project.
So my bike is '82 with 22xxx miles and it has been sitting for past 5 years according to the previous owner but I think much longer.
Tires are produced in '00 and last carb cleaning and tune up was in '09.
But bike looks great, few scuffs here and there but in overall great shape.
It has 6-1 exhaust, not sure which brand and it also came with stock exhaust, extra sprockets, cover, manual and some filters.
So, I removed the seat, tank, drained old gas out of it, still need t flush it and inspect for any rust.
Printed Mike Nixon carb spring cleaning and cleaned those carbs.
Took the oil pan off and inspected the oil pump strainer, cleaned a bit of sludge from the bottom of the pan and reinstalled it with new gasket.
New oil filter, ZDDP additive and fresh oil.
I had some IV hoses and containers so I improvised auxiliary fuel tank and connected it to the carbs and tried starting it.
It took a while and bike started. It was rough and it smoked out of the exhaust but its probably all that carb cleaner coming out as smoke cleared out quickly.
I let it sit overnight and today it took few tries for bike to start. It now runs and idles.
When I checked exhaust pipes, I noticed that #4 cylinder pipe is not as hot as rest of them and all plugs seem wet after I pulled them so it could be running too rich but it is too early to tell as i'll check again once i take it for a ride.
I guess i'm going to get the compression checked first and of course inspect coil.
Does this bike need specific type and brand spark plugs? It now has NGK-R DR8ES-L.

Nicely done all around, you're going about it well. Bike looks fantastic, love that pipe. Post your questions as they arise, the smart guys here will get you sorted.

The DG pipe on your bike is one of the lower priced options.
Personally i like the sound and the look of the spaghetti headers. Access for oil changes, no rejetting and keeping the center stand are pluses.
If you ever make a video of the bike make sure we get to hear your beautiful Jag as well.

Actually you can! Go to youtube and grab the url in the browser's address bar - not the sharing link they offer. Get the one at the tippy-top of your browser window and copy it. Then place your cursor wherever you want the video to embed and click the <youtube> tool just above the message window - then put the cursor in between two tags that look like this (you can just type them too):cross wrote:I sure will post video clip. ...and paste the youtube url you copied prior. Hit submit, and presto, video in your post.
Here's a V-12 CBX!

Hey cross, you a member of the ZRXOA?
A little hint, when you're starting your CBX COLD, keep pressure on the choke lever so it's all the way on, a lot of times the choke plates retract a bit if pressure isn't applied and held and you get a partial choke.

Re: Got '82 CBX, not running
Hi Jeff,
I used to be while back when i owned that bike. I never should of sold it but then again, i say that about all bikes that i owned!
Choke is all the way in, it doesn't back at all. Throttle seems to be lazy on return though. I'm wondering if its cable.
Still need to check number of things on this bike.
