Rocketman's CBX
I am now in to my next project.
I bought the Smoking Joe CBX that was Rocketman's then FalldownPhil's and now mine.
At first I was just going to give her a little TLC and buffing for a daily rider but as things go I need a project to keep my mind occupied and my hands busy.
Yeah I need another project like I need a hole in my head. But I dove in deep today and nearly have her all apart. I'll soda blast and repaint the engine, have one of JR's alternator kits for it, will have the valve cover ceramic coated, the Raask rear sets are getting the brake spindle bushed then those will get ceramic coated, covers will get a high luster polishing.
Engine needs Nada, has less than 3k on a rebuild by Rocketman who I hear is meticulous. I want to find a set of Kerkers or Supetrapps for it, the Jardines drag on the sweeper, I think a set the upsweeps more will take care of that.
Going to send the bodywork to Mark for painting.

Having seen your other projects turn out so well i am sure this one will be a beauty.
I am a big fan of Raask rearsets. In combination with clip-ons they fit me perfectly.

Re: Rocketman's CBX
As my own involvement about, activity with and interest for the CBX is winding down, I am glad to see the continued interest in keeping these bikes from being neglected, thrashed and parted out. It is an awsome thing that you guys are doing. Keep it up!

Re: Rocketman's CBX
I have the engine out now and will fit it to a stand for soda blasting. Frame goes for sand blasting tomorrow. Bodywork to Mark next week for painting.
New oil lines made up of stainless steel wrap will get made next week.
I must be getting old, lifting that monster engine was a litte harder than I remember.
It's a good detractor for me , keeps me busy.
I made a bid on a CBX that looks like crap. She is in real bad shape but it will make another nice project. I just can't see these getting parted out.

Re: Rocketman's CBX
Here is the engine before soda blasting:
The engine after soad blasting:
Primered:
Finally painted:
Next I worked over the lower triple tree, filed all the casting ridges off and then polished it:
Then I turned my attention to the clutch cover:
Before:
Almost done:
I finally got the anodizing off the wheels and so far have polished the rear wheel, The wheels are off a VF1000F and will be powder coated a gloss black:
Here is how she looks at the moment, I put the original Rocketman body parts up. What I have here is parts I have collected over the last couple of years:

Mike, the engine looks great.
Is that an HF engine stand?
You sure do work fast...when do you find time to sleep? lol.

Re: Rocketman's CBX
Hi Steve!
Yeah that's a Harbor Freight stand. I'm happy with it but if I were a professional engine builder I would go with something else.
I grew up watching my dad start projects and either finish them half ass or just never finish them. He was brilliant, creative and skilled. He just could get anything of his own done.
Because of that I chose to stay in task once I start a project. I also choose to do the best work I am capable of.
I can't wait to get Rocketman's bike back together. She will look pretty nice.

Wheels are at the powder coat shop. Not much has been accomplished of late due to work conflict but I did get up early and polish out the fork caps:

I know some people disable the air in the forks but i use it and like the fork action.
My guess is more purple for the wheels?

Hey Steve,
I'll let the wheels be a surprise.
Have you added any spacers for preload or do you rely on the air?
Mike

Re: Rocketman's CBX
I was able to get the wheels on today, not firmly placed but out of the way, I still have a little machine work to do on the rear wheel spacer, I had to spread the swingarm ever so slightly to get the wheel in so I figure .025" off the spacer will do it. That is a reinforced CB900F swingarm.

Re: Rocketman's CBX
Mike,
I do believe that it is moving right along and looking good. I happen to have some inside information that it handles very well !!
I am really looking forward to its completion. (not that they are ever done)
Very Best,
Phil
