Looks awesome Dave.

As close to showroom as they come. Where do you get the engine break in sticker on the speedometer from?

Mike and Mike:

That break-in sticker, believe it or not, is the original. But several places reproduce them, as well as most of the other caution/warning decals.

I have at least 250 hours in this bike. That's about my average for a full restoration. Won't make very good wages at that! I'd have to sell the bike for $20,000 to make any real money, but that's not really why I do it.

Thanks, Vern, but yours is nothing to sneeze at! We'll compare in Charleston.

Dave I have a question re oversize Oldham couplers: I can understand freezing them and maybe heating up one removed camshaft to fit on the bench.
But then what do you about coupling this set to the other cam on the engine? Maybe freeze the removed cam plus fitted Oldham and then push to engage on the other cam on the engine?

I have a set and thinking of giving it a try. But not quite sure what is the best way to go about it ..

Aris:

It's a piece of cake. Just freeze the joints, remove both left-side cams and old joints. Then start the new joints into the cams that are still in the engine. Tap them in with a plastic hammer - they go in pretty easily. Then start each cam into the joints and tap them in as well. I've done several and even one set into a brand new cam and they still tapped right in.

Dave, do you use the oversize joints on all of your CBXs?

If not, what is your decision criteria?

I put the oversize joints first in my original '79 @ about 42,000 miles. The top end was extremely noisy and all else was well. Immediately cured the noise, as was advertised. I've installed a few other sets, but several of the restorations I didn't. There's no functional advantage - they're just quieter. And I'm sure with lots of miles they'll loosen up also, but they do work.

I should have said - 'everything else associated with making the top end noisy was well - cam chain adjustment, valve adjustment'.
