As Dave said about separating the carb bodies and installing Viton o-rings everywhere. Otherwise, you WILL be doing this again.

Thanks Larry!

I’ve got half the carbs separated and cleaned. All those o-rings were hard as rocks. I’ve got a rebuild kit, Air T’s and insulators enroute.

Re: Dewey’s 1979 CBX - Carburetor

I know everyone has their own way, but this is how I do the vacuum pistons caps.

These weren’t too bad, as this is the worst one of the bunch.
20241129_124445_Original.jpeg
I soak them in paint stripper to remove the clear coat. This is a methyl chloride aircraft paint stripper.
20241127_145708_Original.jpeg
I start with red scotch-brite to remove any residual clear coat. Then grey scotch-brite, followed by white scotch-brite. This gives them the soft brushed finished similar to when they were new.

Once I finish all of them, these will get a few coats of Eastwood’s 2K clear coat.

Re: Dewey’s 1979 CBX - Dots

Were these just white adhesive dots from the factory? Was anything written on them?

Went with the big Yuasa YTX24HL-BS. Looking at it in the box, I didn’t think it would fit. But it fits just fine! 350 CCAs!

Re: Dewey’s 1979 CBX - Brakes

Started cleaning up the brakes. These are in really nice shape. Even the little plastic “window” cleaned up well. I’m pretty sure those are the original pads with the red strips.

The carbs are cleaning up very nice. I wash them in my parts washer to remove any dirt and oil. Then a quick wash with Dawn dish soap. I put them in the ultrasonic cleaner for 12 minutes. I rinse them with water and blow them dry. They’ll get the passages brushed one final time with carb cleaner before assembly. Just waiting on my carb kits and air T’s.

More cleaning today. I was reading some old threads that reminded me to get the air screw o-rings and washers out.

My carburetor kits, air T’s and throttle link seals all arrived today! I was an equal opportunity purchaser, with parts coming from KM, Randakk’s and CMSNL. Tomorrow we start re-assembly.

You are doing a great job.

Take time when assembling the carbs and ensure that they are working 100% mechanically together, pay special attention to the throttle plates that they are moving freely all the way from idle position to WOT.

Check/adjust choke fast idle and the acceleration pump stroke.
Check/adjust floats.

Before you install the carb rack, bench synch the carbs by using the first progression port as a reference, leak test the carbs for some hours and check that the acceleration pump is working.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions! Helps to stir those CBX brain cells that have been dormant for 15 years. I’ll head down to the shop and start assembling the rack today once I get a couple of cups of coffee in me. I also want to install the battery and check all the lights and the starter after putting a little oil down the cylinders.

The white paper dots are from the factory. Nothing written on them. There is one on the back of the cam cover.
Best,
Phil

Very cool! I’d never seen them mentioned before. I have one on the back of the cam cover and another by the engine serial number.
