81 CBX auction sale
Hi all;
Got a tip on a 1981 CBX at a bankrupsy auction. I have the oppertunity to see it tomorrow before the auction on Wednesday. I'm told it is complete and in reasonable shape, has 50,000 km on it and is non running.
The fellow who let me know about it feels the value for any non-running bike is $500 max.
Any thoughts?

Re: 81 CBX auction sale
If you get it for $500.-, consider yourself lucky. The fellow who let you know about it, is a tad out of touch with CBX prices.
You may pay $500.- for a Prolink clutch and another $500.- for a set of carbs, all off a non-running bike....

That is what I was thinking as well.EMS wrote:If you get it for $500.-, consider yourself lucky. The fellow who let you know about it, is a tad out of touch with CBX prices.

My tipster is more used to dealing with, lost interest projects, bits in a box, Brit bikes.

Re: 81 CBX auction sale
The only thought i would have is to try and buy it before the auction.
Prices can get out of sight very quickly if there are a couple impulsive bidders in the room.

Re: 81 CBX auction sale
The bike is a total unknown, but even so I’d expect it to fetch 2K if its not rough cosmetically. Expect to spend at least twice that amount to make it a nice runner.

Re: 81 CBX auction sale
Had a look at the 81CBX.
Tatty condition. Hand controls badly faded and corroded. Engine filthy and upper engine hangers are rusty. Fairing has cracks and rear fender broken and pieces missing. Front fairing broken at attachment points of lower pieces. Plexi shield broken at a couple of attachment points. Tank looks ok as do the bags. Front forks look good, no pitting or rust or leaks.
The bike is at a receivership auction of an oil patch machine shop company. Its part of the owners toy collection.
A bunch of muscle cars and a drag car. Loads of misc tools and crap.
I'm hopeing the other bikes capture anyone elses eye so I can snap up a cheap parts bike.
The other bikes are
3 decent Harley's.
2 decent BMW's
1 Norton Commando
1 Ducati 900 desmo Elephant in excellent condition.
2 60's era Honda trail bikes (110cc , 125cc) in very nice original shape
1 Big Rucus
Fingers crossed eh?

Me thinks that is about a "WOW"! From your description, somebody has at least twice that to put into it just to be a rider.

Sheesh. Makes me feel pretty good about my recent acquisition, from the sound of it.

Re: 81 CBX auction sale
Had a chat with my auction tipster. He felt the values were above the norm for everything. He passed on everything on his shopping list but for a couple of items. He put the prices bid down to spring time exuberance. Oh well.

Re: 81 CBX auction sale
Well, I obviously didn't see the bike and from your description, it was pretty rough, but exactly what are folks "in the know" prepared to pay for a virtual basket case? (This one didn't sound like a total basket). I've seen some borderline junk going for surprising numbers. $2500 doesn't sound horrible to me, but again, it depends on the machine sitting in front of you - which I/we didn't see.

Definition of insanity.
Upon further review, i wonder if the buyer will follow through with the transaction.
