New guy in Albuquerque NM

Post by Dmerc »

Bringing an 81 cbx back to life. Has 17K miles and has always been garaged. Sat for about 5 years and the gas tank is ugly but I have saved worse. Looking for the left fairing pocket cover. Otherwise it all seems to be in excellent condition with a new paint job. It's the Jay Leno paint scheme. done a lot of carb work but this will be a challenge for sure but hey I rebuilt a couple automatic transmissions so what could go wrong. :o My dad had two of these bikes so in some way I want restore this one in his memory. start fiddling with the tank in a couple days.

Thanks Mouse, first setback is pin holes in the gas tank. Previous owner paid big bucks to have everything painted factory with all the correct graphics. Then let it sit for 5 years. Damn shame. Guess I'll clean the tank as best I can and coat it after fixing the pin holes.what tank sealer have you guys used? Thanks, dave

As Solarmoose so eloquently put it, yes the carb book is a complete breakdown, cleaning and re-assembly manual.
Tips on tools and many tricks not included in the repair manual.
New o-rings and gaskets IF required can be obtained at Tims or Randakk.

I have used a Por15 tank liner kit with excellent results.

The repair manual was not written/issued for the home mechanic. It was a "Honda shop manual". Many procedures and techniques in there were assumed to be general mechanics' knowledge and thus not explained in detail. Mike Nixon's booklet takes a different approach and tells you exactly what to do, step by step.
Thanks again, Mike, for providing the community with these invaluable instructions.
