2018 Sunday Ride Classic report

As I mentioned back in January, I had this event on my bucket list for some time. Europeans have a much more active calendar for classic bikes and
Vintage racing events. Some are held on legendary tracks such as this one at the PAUL RICARD racetrack in southern France near Marseille, or SPA in Belgium, and many more
In UK , Germany, Italy , Spain etc…

Not only the bike diversity is amazing but you actually see them in action, it includes the actual bikes raced back in the days, and often their own pilots !
So you see guys in their 60’s , or 70’s going at it for the pleasure of the crowd. It is possible to go in the paddock, up close, and actually talk to these legends like
Freddie Spencer, Wes Cooley (honored this year) , and many more European past and current champions. I got to meet Mr Coulon, the genius wrench of the Moto GP Yamaha Tech3 team,
And ex Colin Edwards mechanic. So much to see , hear and do over the 3 day weekend.

One of the reason why I went this year also is that it celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Honda CBX , my favorite classic forever !
The French CBX Club was well represented with about 80 CBX’s of all kinds and years,, including awesome customized ones , Moto Martin CBX’s
And a unique sandcast pre-production model with serial # 12 owned by a nice gentleman from Belgium. HONDA France and the CBX club treated us to
A lavish lunch and barbecue in the restaurant overlooking the track at the starting grid . Then a lap of honor with all CBX’s roaring together…
What a symphony !

During this event, I had talked our friend Ian FOSTER into coming over and join me with his lovely wife Snooky. He was a super Star among all the CBX fans,
Even some of the racers who were aware of his amazing two books dedicated to the CBX ! I know he had a great time and was happy to sign copies for
Many book owners.

The links below will give you an idea about the event, for me it will be unforgettable ! like the old days in the nineties when we could go to Daytona and
Meet a bunch of celebrities racers, remember the battle of Legends ? , watch great racing, smell racing fuel , and get together with old and new found friends!

Success!
Great pics and video clips, JP. Ian looking a bit sheepish with his celebrity.
Thank you very much for taking the time and effort to post them.

Your next bike get-together at the coffee shop will seem boring.

Worth the wait JP, so nice to see you, Ian and Snooky enjoying yourselves. The track footage is nice peak into a trip of a lifetime, so glad you got the chance to go and bask in the light shed by Ian's celebrity! :teasing-poke:

Ian knows his CBX's but he can't bake for shite!

:laughing-rolling: Jeff!
Ian cooking was never tested while in France but he did not seem to have a problem with the local mediterranean food, and even less with the wine!

Next on the bucket list for me is the same type of event in SPA Belgium , usually in June.

I forgot to mention that during yhe weekend , they held a 4hr endurance race Bol d’Or style from 8pm to Midnight on Saturday, it was Awesome! Except for the Harris GSXR shown in the pics.
The ambiance around the track is unique with picnics, BBQ
And wine poured everywhere! The whole track is lit up and I was Amazed by how that track is now, last time I saw it was in 1999 During the french MotoGP (last year of 2 stroke), then it was not
Very hospitable, dusty, mostly unpaved around. Then Bernie Ecclestone bought it and poured a lot of money into it, a 5 star resort is across the entrance and the restaurant upstairs the main building with private lodges is first class, the View of the track too. The infield was filled with vendors of exotic parts, along the Tire manufacturers. The Tech3 MotoGP trailer was there , they are not far, and an impressive Collection of race bikes, including their own Olivier Jacques and his 250 Moto GP title bike.
The only manufacturers present for demo rides were Indian and KTM.
There was also a strange Ovni loaded on a tractor flat bed , it was a Isle of Man race simulator.

The main benefit of such event is being able to go in each pit and look close to each bike Inside and talk to the crew, pilots have included. Then as you could see from the videos, being able to stand and watch by the trackside! Where else can you do that???
Not even in Daytona glory days could we do it.
I was happy to see Ian and I given a warm welcome and be among some real CBX Enthusiasts!

JP - seriously, I think you're right. But it is good to see guys somewhat younger getting into the vintage bike scene.

This event would make a great Xpress article!!
