That's the James I know. He hooked me up with a few parts over the years and has always been great to deal with.

When another vendor sent me the wrong cams, I went out to see James and brought my old ones and calipers for comparison. He had set out his 79 cams and a set of 80 cams, and had a caliper there too, ready to compare and demonstrate. When I told him I had brought my own, he said "even better - take all the time you need!" He also told me if I don't like the looks of the cams, there's no pressure - he only wants to do deals that people are happy about.

The email address I have for him is:

Was going for a ride last weekend but the bike wouldn't crank over. Half a turn and stops as if battery is dead even though it was on the charger until that point. I also could smell electric burning coming from the starter and it got pretty warm when i touch black cover behind the starter.
So, this weekend i checked battery voltage and it was 12.57v. Charged it yesterday and today it measure 12.87 after being off the charger for about an hour. BIke still wouldn't start. I checked the voltage on the battery while starting and voltage drops to about 10.5v.jumped another battery to it and it still cranks over a bit more it stops, not even full turn.
I guess i'll be tilting the engine again to remove it for inspection :(

You don't have to tilt the engine to remove the starter. Check your grounds.

I wanted to check ground but I figured that's since black cover of the starter got hot and there was electrical burning smell coming from it that there was sparking going on inside so I was hinting on the starter.
I'll definitely have to figure out how to take it off without tilting the engine as I can barely see starter more less find bolts to remove it
Thanks Dave

Some tips on removing the starter motor, Cross.
It was the chain guard bracket thing that tripped me up.

Are we sure that isn't a symptom of hydraulic lock?

I doubt it bacause I have '82 and vacuum fuel shut off valve and bike is always on center stand but you have a point there.
I'll check that too
Thanks

Having not had the time to take the bike for a run in a few weeks, I was up early and took it for breakfast :DD and ran a couple of errands. Nice cool temps for a ride and it was enjoyable until the bike started its old habit of stalling at stop lights when the engine is hot. Is this because the pod filters are getting heated air rising from the engine or something else. And is there anyway to defeat or disconnect the "must be in neutral to start" device. Having traffic stuck behind you as you do a foot balance dance to get it into neutral and restarted is idiotic. :?

Does the cbx have that function? My '82 starts with clutch pulled in if it's in gear

Yes it should start in gear with the clutch lever pulled in.

Hey Mouse,
My 79 will only start when in neutral.
And when the engine is hot, finding neutral after stalling can be akin to finding love in a brothel.

Is the switch in your clutch lever plugged in ?
Best,

Is that where the thingy is? I'll check that.
At least I'm not the only one having this happen

There are a few "thingy's" related to this system. There is also a neutral start switch and a diode hidden in your wiring harness.
Very Best,
