Paul, your bike is clearly out of the November production range. While the date on the motor is an interesting bit of information, which was discovered and explained by Tom Battison several years ago, it has absolutely nothing to do with the bike's production date.
Almost all engines were built way before the bike was assembled.
The latest October-built bike I have on record is CB1-20 14973 and the first November bike I know of is CB1-20 14994.

Mike,

Forgive me - I probably got the terminology wrong!

I assumed the date on the engine is manufacturing / assembly date of the engine itself.

I have no way of knowing production / build date - no frame plate to record it for UK bikes. But from your data it would suggest it is a November bike given it's only about 500 above your earliest recorded frame number for November.

Paul.

Paul,

Forgive me - I probably got the terminology wrong!

I should have said the bike is clearly from within the November production range. At least that's what I meant to say, forgetting that "out of..range" in English means not from within the range.

At this time, I can say that anything between CB1-20 14994 and CB1-20 17346 is November production. I am adding to that data all the time.

As I was just working on the CBX development and production start write-up after another conversation with a former Honda employee, I was able to find more evidence of high VIN numbers.
Ever so often, people refer to the Honda parts book and fiches as a resource for serial numbers. In some of these publications, the end of the 1979 CBX CB-1 or CBX-Z production is stated as serial-no...23175.
I think there is ample proof that this number only applies to the sales region for which the publications were intended for, in this case, the U.S. (or North America)
Besides the fact that we have heard of owners in Europe that own CB1s with VIN-numbers higher than CB1-20 2023175, there now is evidence of the highest number that I will have on record: CB1-20 24200.
Further digging revealed the highest 1979 model CBX (CBX-Z) produced as CB1-20 24590. This was a "European Direct Import" - whatever that means. The last CBX-Z imported into and sold in Germany was CB1-20 24578.
The only other country that received a CBX-Z with a chassis-no over 24000 was France. CB1-20 24315.
So, we may have had the first 1979 CBX in the U.S., but we did not have the last one. 8)
OK so I am about to buy a frame with VIN CB1-2024848 (have the picture from the head stock below) does this mean I will have the highest CB1 ever made? Unfortunately its missing the engine :-(

Longclose,

On my other post I have mentioned that there is here in the UK a Z engine which originated in South Africa CB1E-24624
could this be the engine for the frame as about right gap between the numbers?!

Wyly,

The first set of numbers is the production date of the engine: yy.mm.dd (the date is Japanese notation so year 53 is 1978)
the number below is apparently a running count of how many engines built that day.

good to know, after watching a documentary on the Honda assembly plant I was under the impression the engine and frame would've been made on the same day...probably explains why engine and frame numbers never match.

It appears that South Africa was one of the largest markets for the CBX and ended up with some of the last bikes from Japan. My current rebuild project which is a "79" black model which may have been an import from Germany is frame number 2020452, this is being fitted with engine number 2024615. Unfortunately I only came across this frame last week - the engine would have been better suited to that frame number. Unfortunately the registration papers are in the system being processed already for the black bike.

Love the old school Kerkers, one the best performing aftermarket 6 into 2 systems available back then and IMHO one the best looking megaphone exhausts too!
