CBX Tacho problem

Post by DENDEN »

Can anyone give some advice on the following?
I broke the bushings in the cam cap for the tacho drive. Has anyone ever welded up one of these caps and then reamed out the tacho drive gear bushings? The cap is still good, it is just the drive gear bushes which have broken.
Anyone have any views on the importance of the oil pool plates in the cylinder head? are they really required, as they are not available any more, and my engine does not have them?

First advice is to follow the shop manual when doing anything. Breaking things is expensive on CBXs. Louis will have a replacement for you. Anything can be done, I suppose. You have nothing to lose by trying to weld it.

I don't think the shop manual will address replacing the tach-drive cam cap. Originally, no cam caps were supposed to be replaced, as they were all line-bored with the head. Only after maybe 5,000 owners broke the tach drive cam cap because they did not remove the drive before taking the valve cover off, Honda caved in and made this one replacement cam cap available. If you get one and replace it, you must "plasti-gauge" the clearance.
I would not operate the engine without the oil pool plates.

No, but the shop manual clearly states to remove the tach drive before removing the valve cover, to keep from breaking it. And yes, I would find some pool plates - Louis has lots of those too.

I have worked on a CBX that someone had made that repair, the current owner didn't know anything about it but said the repair had at least 10,000 miles on it, his mileage since ownership.

I suggested that he should look around for a new or used replacement but I don't know if he ever did.
