79 CBX Rebuild

Just got my 79 CBX back from Preston Marks after he did a complete engine rebuild over the winter. He does a FANTASTIC job - I recommend him highly. Got the valve & clutch covers chromed by Space Coast Plating in Florida - they did a superb job too. Bill Brint provided a set of J&E Piston with higher compression, and Louis Mintrone came up with al the other parts: valves, cam chain, tensioner, etc. What a team!

And it runs as good as it looks - red-lined 4th gear at 110 MPH on the speedo - about 100 MPH in the real world. Have ordered some new tires so will let you know what it does in 5th gear soon...

Hi Vince! Yes, Preston is about the best for complete CBX engine rebuilds. I'm curious though, you should be hitting nearly 120 mph at redline in 4th gear. Are you geared shorter than stock? Back in my drag racing days, the speedo needle was just hitting 120mph when I went through the traps, still in 4th gear. I'd shift to 5th, then coast down from there. My actual trap speeds were 117-118 range, still in 4th gear.

Looks fantastic, Vince.
Big engine, Pipemasters, top speed run?
Pleaseeee attach a GoPro on your bike when you get the new rubber.

Dave,

I think my chain & sprockets are completely stock. And I wasn't quite at the red-line, which starts at 9.5K and runs to 10.5K - I was only at 9K, so maybe that's why a little slower? Also, my tires are pretty worn so their circumference is less which lowers the gearing a bit. Once I get the new tires on, I'll try 10K in 4th and then see what 5th will too...

O.K. Vince, You've now have put new rubbers on the bike last we talked.
My suggestion was to use a GPS device to measure speed.
Will expect results and information on performance at the end of the
day on 6/71/18.
By the way, I think the warranty is soon to expire if this motor is not
abused to the limits by 6:00 pm est 6/17/18.

Phil may be but he did not build the motor.
Usually an engine that I have built does not
leave my garage until it has 3-5 hours of my
abuse on it. Vince took it away before I was
done testing my work.
If it's gonna fail I want to break it and make
it better before releasing it, As once it crosses
the driveway the warranty is done. What can you
guarentee on 40 year old parts?
So yess I will BULLY Vince to abuse my work.
See if you can break it! (:

You Preston, reminded me of a fellow I knew quite a few years back. I had taken to him a 69 Austin Mini to have the engine rebuilt. When he returned the car he said "don't be afraid to wail on it, if it breaks I did something wrong and I'll fix it". Wail on it I did, break it didn't. Car is now in different hands, still going strong. :-)
