Well, it looks to be a non US version, at least as far as the speedo is concerned. Has the Euro (low) bars, aftermarket exhaust and that might be a Hondaline rack and crash bars. Otherwise, it appears to be a genuine Z model (first year).

The paint looks pretty good for a bike approaching 30,000 miles. It looks like it's leaning a bit too much. With mine, I had about 1/8th inch of steel added to the bottom of the side stand foot, had the arm heated and straightened and then added a steel rod on the inner edge so it never bends again. Have you had an old bike before?

There is no 'Japanese' version of the '79. They were all made in Japan, with variants for different markets (actually they were not sold in Japan). Does your bike have a large headstock VIN tag (US and Canada), or the World market small VIN tag on the right frame rail in front of the tank? The bike looks very original, with the exhaust being the biggest non-stock thing I see. The fuel tank even still has the original 'moles'. The fork caps are missing the little black plastic plugs, the upper crash guard mount bolt is non-stock and possibly the oil cooler mount bolts aren't stock, but they may be upside down - can't tell for sure. The headlight glass is not a stock US halogen version - maybe other markets required something else. Is it a particularly low serial number?

You have an excellent CBX there, one that has been lucky to survive the years intact. What are your plans for it? Detail and service and ride it? Or keep it to collect? Congrats on a great find!

As the OP is from New Zealand, I assume it would be a local spec bike. NZ did not have a unique spec bike, so it could be a "U" version - Australia or a "DK" version - General Export (kph).
The most visible difference between the two are the rear shocks. DK has the U.S. style shock and Australia has the Euro style (same as 80 model) shock. I cannot tell from the pics which it is.
In either case, the serial number will not be particularly low as U bikes start with ...6831 and DK with ...8796.
I agree, it is a great original condition bike

Any body with a guess as to the manufacturer of the exhaust?
I like the shape of the mufflers.

Looks like this bike would clean up nicely! maintenance records would be nice to check, surprised that it does not have a fuel filter between petcock and carbs, and chain from what shows, looks rough & rusty. As for the shocks, they appear to be the standard export (DK) same as mounted on the US model. If you can test it or at least hear it run, that would be a must to decide, but overall, a nice looking X

I have bought the bike and it is now back home.
It is in great, unmolested and original condition.
Brakes and carbs have been overhauled by an ex Honda mechanic who used to work on them when they were new....

Thanks. It came with the original owner's manual (that I will scan and offer to forum members) and a Honda workshop manual (too many pages to scan I'm afraid)
