Hi Guys,

Here is the other side of number 12. Hope you found the VIN and engine number of 32/37 in above images in my previous post of interest. As I said previously it shows pre-production manufacture crept into early 1978 rather than all in 1977 as thought previously.

Thanks Jeff,

Hope you are well. I have started a new black 79 thread on here with image of a French black 79 from a French magazine from 1979.

Back to the sandcast topic - J.E. from Canada just sent me photos of his bike and it is indeed the same one in Mel's photos and in Mike's records: VIN# 32 and engine #37. By then Honda had cast the final engine serial number location. Good stuff!

Thanks Dave,

I must contact James to get image of the full bike. Will have known him 20 years in June.

I should have more correctly said he sent me pictures of the VIN tag and engine # - not the whole bike. It might be in a million pieces now awaiting restoration - not sure about that.

I have just got a CBX. I got it for a SONG and in bits. Put it back together and it ran straight away. I have never owned one before and am already very pleased with it. Will need some fettling but not much.

Where is the engine number please. It looks from professor google like it should be on the top cranks on a plate and where the back of the barrels meet the case. Mine has no plate. It was the sandcastle article that made me think this might be an anomaly. Someone (most likely in the 80's judging by their attempts) chromed a lot of bits and powder coated a lot more so maybe the number is buried but I would love to know where. I only have a couple of bad pics of it on my ramp but here you are anyway if it helps.

Look forward to hearing back with some advice. BTW. I am London based - is this a global forum or am I talking to the brits here?

Barnie

PS. Turns out I don't know how to upload a photo sorry.

:text-welcomewave: this is a global forum, most members are from the USA and Canada and UK but we have contributors from everywhere...

on the back of the cases there is date of the engines manufacture unless someone has painted it...the actual serial number can be difficult to see ... from what I understand the early models number is above the gearbox/clutch and later engines all had the number near the cylinders...you can see both in this photo
7415

loading photos can be maddening (it helps if you have an iphone)...
my procedure

-email photo to your laptop(I reduce the size of the picture file on my iphone)
-download photo into picture file
-go to forum website and click on (user control panel)
-click on gallery
-click on manage personal albums
-click on upload image
-click on browse ...find the your picture file and click on the picture you want to upload
-click continue...if the file isn't too large click submit and your done, if too large you'll need to reduce it.

Attached a picture - in early Z's, the engine number is on the top crankase - just right of the stater moror in the picture. The build date is on the rear of the cases as Wyly said.

Hi guys,

Don't want to put too fine a point on it but I set up this thread to discuss sandcast bikes. Please set up new thread if you want to discuss crankcases and engine numbers.
