K@N air filters

Post by MIKE DAVIS »

what is the secret to getting a '79 to run well using triple K@Ns. My stock except for a 6 into 1 kerker just doesn't want to start. I live at 4,500 ft. elev. and once started it runs fine but at sea level I have to cover half of each filter with tape to get it to run.

Could be the choke setup is not working properly or even dirty idle jets.
What jetting are you using with the K&N filters.
Some great info from Mike Nixon on elevations changes and the CV carbs.

Your hard starting has nothing to do with the K&Ns. These things are notoriously hard starters if the carbs aren't, as Steve said, perfectly cleaned and the accelerator pump adjusted and working. Separately, if your carbs aren't Stage 3 Dyna-Jetted or fitted with 80/120 stock-type mains, then the bike won't run close to right, once started, with the K&Ns. You MUST have the carbs completely clean and functioning and you MUST verify what jetting the carbs have before doing any further evaluation.

I live at 3,500ft and have ridden through the Rockies near my home at 4,500ft and then down to sea level with no issues from a stock setup. If they're clean and adjusted properly the carbs shouldn't cause you any problems.
CBX a work in progress, still improving...GS1150EFE completed and awaiting modifications.....RD350, remnants in boxes scattered throughout the garage

Your K&Ns may not create enough intake vacuum for the CV carbs. Replacing the original airbox and filters on a CBX is always a gamble and necessitates retuning/rejetting of the carbs.
