Caliper and rear master cylinder "Red dots"

Post by ajs350 »

I'm about to paint my calipers and rear master cylinder and could use some advice as to how to best paint the red dot's. Also does anyone know what paint code the red dot should be?
Thanks
Ross

You could cheat and get some stick-on red dots. I'm sure I've heard of that being done. I never repainted the dots so can't really answer your question.

Ross,

What kind of paint are you using and how did you prep? Photos would be most welcome :-)

Dave
Sticky dots sound like a great idea. Where would I get them. Is this something one of the CBX vendors sells?

Nils, I'll take photos of the prep process and post the before and after images here. I'm using VHT satin black caliper paint. I'm told it should hold up to a little Dot 3 spillage. We shall see.

I can't help you with the red dot but I do have some NOS air from a set of 79 tires that I'll sell for $50.00 a canister.

Just kidding aj, $40.00 for members.

Ross:
Don't really know exactly what to use, but I'm sure something from a hobby store would work. Even if all you could find were sticky sheets, you could cut and stack them and use the appropriate leather punch or similar to cut them out. Wish I could remember where I heard that.

Hey aj, been thinking on this.

What if you got a small piece of rubber tubing with the Inner ID the size of the dot you want to recreate. Slice a very thin cross section of the tube, get some two inch painters tape, tape the cross sectioned piece to the caliper, wraping the complete caliper, then take a utility knife and trim the opening of the cross section, paint by starting with a light coat and let it flash, repeat until it's covered.

You could also use a rubber gasket or O-ring as the template.

Here are pictures of the rear master cylinder and front & back calipers. As you can see they are a bit grotty.

4838
All the pieces on the bench with one helper sticking bolts into a box to be painted.
4840
The calipers and mounting hardware were washed with Gunk and then sanded with 320 wet and dry.

Duplicolor caliper Red paint was applied to the calipers and rear master cylinder.
4841
I bought some 10mm stickers from Staples. I needed 3 but had to buy 720; let me know if you need some.
Even after the sanding and painting it was easy to see where the dots should be.
4842
Then I used VHT satin black caliper paint for the calipers, master cylinders and mounting hardware.
4843
Pick off the stickers and you are done.

I have the English Stickers for the foot plates but I kind of like the French ones so there they stay.
Good catch though Barry!

Excellent, just excellent! The '79 is really looking good. I trust it is still running as well?

Runs like a bandit Dave! Just need to recover the seat and then mull over whether I repaint the candy apple red or leave it with its slight fading.
I must say the 79 really is a different ride with the sport kit compared to the US spec. For a blast around my local roads this is my preferred ride but anything more than an hour and I long for the 80 with its high bars which I can ride all day.
