Many thanks for the responses

Post by OSCARMARK »

Once again gentlemen.... thank you
especially to Alimey4u2 for posting my pictures, they really help!!
I do have the correct manuals and all spacers are correctly placed. The bearing appear fine and have not been removed.
The chain adjusters are correct.

Going from the left hand side the spindle goes through
1. Chain adjuster
2. Swinging arm
3. Chain adjuster
4. Spacer
5. Hub
6. Spacer
7. Caliper mounting bracket
8. Chain adjuster
9. Swinging arm
10. Chain adjuster
11. Locking nut with split pin

As mentioned earlier, someone suggested that the spindle may be bent, but that is not the case. If I place a washer between the offside spacer and the mounting bracket, that would give me the 1 or 2mm I need.

Once again, I am overwhelmed by your kind responses.

Although the bike is laid up until March, I would really like to sort this out.

Regards

Mark

Now that is an exhaust that a man could grow to enjoy. I like it. Who made it?

Exhaust??

Post by OSCARMARK »

I know I am in the Brake Forum............. but foes anyone recognise this exhaust?? It may be from US, I am not sure........ All I know is it is loud, I mean really loud!!!!!!!
The silencers point skywards and even on tickover push out enough gas to remove even to leaves from trees, ice cream from cones, wigs etc..

I have said before, it sounds as near to a Formula 1 car on Viagra!! And with 6 pipes, even people who know nothing about bikes stare in awe!!

All the best

Mark

From memory only as I'm at work, aren't the left and right spacers different? I recall some years ago changing the rear on my 79 and I got the spacers reversed and it wouldn't line up properly. Just a thought.

Your memory is good, Terry, the spacers are different. The right side (caliper bracket) spacer has a collar, the left side (sprocket) spacer is just a plain spacer.

Now if the datum of item 3 ( bearing retainer) had moved "in" due to ( lots of scenarios but I'm going with collapsed item 11 [ bearing spacer] ) This is the same datum that contacts the brake caliper support bracket.....

Could be off track here though....Not a Comstar expert..
One more thing, Mark, following Larry's train of thought: The spacer on my 79 extends by 9mm from the wheel. Measured from the surface of the bearing retainer to the outside surface of the spacer.

Mark, in re: "http://photobucket.com/albums/hh189/osc ... 0_0882.jpg

It didn't for me. This is what I do. After saving pics to my PC I reduce their size and then transfer them to an album in PB. Under each PB pic, the following appears,

Email & IM
Direct Link
HTML Code
IMG Code

I click once on the HTML which automatically saves or copies it and then on the site I click paste and the actual picture appears for most everyone, like this,

Image

For those that can't get it, you can provide the actual link, after you click on the pic in PB to enlarge it, like this for example,

Hope this helps. :)

Mark:
Honda makes different spacers for different models that look exactly the same. Some are just thicker than others. My guess is that someone got either the wrong sprocket side spacer (most likely) or the wrong collared spacer on your bike. I can measure the correct CBX ones for you to compare to what you have. Also make sure you have the correct sprocket carrier for the Comstar wheel - lots of other Honda ones work but are not the same offset.

One more thing - make sure you didn't lose the number '9' on the parts picture. It's the distance collar for the sprocket carrier and holds it out in the correct position.

I noticed one thing looking at the photos of the caliper carrier. There is a wedge shaped gap from where the disc contacts it down towards the axle. If the disc is straight(should be, he replaced it) this would indicate to me that the carrier is bent. Try putting the caliper back on(push back the piston) and see if the pads are square to the disc. You should be able to see it out of square if my suspicions are correct.

Good point that Dave has brought up, the gap should parallel with the disc. If it isn't, it would suggest a warped bracket or non parallel spigot/boss area about the axle. The first photo does seem to show a twist but the second seems to show straight ?? May well be the camera angle of the first picture but it does suggest an alternative train of thought supported by others.... :thumupp:

Another thought

Post by OSCARMARK »

Gents,
Dave Hansen noticed that the carrier does not appear to be sitting square. I know the disc runs true......... and it would be an amazing coincidence that the new carrier is slightly bent in exactly the same place that the old one was. The disc is sitting nicely against the wheel.
Someone suggested fitting a 2mm washer between the spacer and the carrier bracket???
The disc should then runs nice and centrally through the gap. Any imperfection will be taken up by the calliper when fitted???

Any requests for me to take any photos, I will try and post them to clear up any issues.

Thanks again guys

Mark
