Sorting keys on my 79 Z

Post by Kool_Biker »

Did all 79s have one key for ignition, fuel cap and the helmet holder?
Thanks, Aris

All my CBXes did too. The 80s in addition had the tail-lid with the same key and the Prolinks the saddlebag locks and mounting and right side fairing pocket.

Thanks

Then as expected mine's a mess:

Can you shed any light at all on which one is of the right type and which is/are not?

Hint: Am I right in thinking the slotted part of the ignition key should be on its other side (mirror image), as is the case with the tank & holder keys?

Cheers, Aris

The fuel tank key is the original CBX key.

The steering lock was a European option and we do not have this in the U.S. Could be that this is original. The helmet holder key is a Honda key, but not for a CBX. Maybe somebody had a blank cut.
The ignition key maybe from an ignition lock for a different Honda. Some of the Goldwing locks fit the CBX.

The steering lock on the euro bikes (in the frame) had the key you have for it.

Thanks chaps all this is useful.
Am I correct about below??

Armed with this knowledge I will now begin changing and adjusting the locks to end up with one key for the first 3 functions - ignition, fuel, helmet.

Which is, to say, is far less interesting than rebuilding my engine (for those who know my perils), but infinitely less stressful

Aris
You would be correct, assuming the same key operates all items.

I was afraid ..
So, I begin with a correct new / second hand european ignition lock, and after, I adopt the fuel tank lock to the former's key.
The helmet lock & key, a much lower priority, can wait.
Thanks a lot!

Folks,

I've looked and looked into our site regarding the subject of removing the tank lock barrel and what I found (above) was interesting if, to me at least, too vague.

Is there a more detailed, more up to date description somewhere I missed?

As before, my objective is to modify the tank lock to work with my ignition key.

Many thanks
Aris

Easy peasy folks.

The tank lock barrel comes by gently pushing back its top-most (spring loaded) blade and pushing down, as shown in the attached pics.

Then it's all about swapping the 5 little main blades around and using your best miniature files to re program the lock.

Hope this helps.

Good lord. The man's an animal. (I mean this in a good way).

Not too many "average Joes" willing to reprogram a lock cylinder.

Well done sir. You must have lots of time on your hands!

Hi Nils,

It's the challenge and the great pleasure that follows when a small problem is solved.
I looked everywhere and could not find this info. So ..

BTW, thanks for all the great tips and equally great photography in RestoCycle! :text-+1:
